I have frequented the midtown NYC BonChon location many times, and each time the food was excellent. When I saw this BonChon location in Jersey City, I got excited, until I actually walked in and tried their food...
This place has the same aroma as a cheap Chinese food restaurant (a surprise to me, as the other BonChon did not have an odor). The chicken strips were actually little flat asymmetrical discs, and looked like they were pounded down to flatten them, maybe as a cost saving measure to get more chicken from each piece? The midtown NYC BonChon location serves good portioned tender strips, which are not flattened, and actually have thickness to them.
The crisp of the chicken itself was excellent, but due to the flat nature of the strips, the meat was not very moist (again, using the midtown BonChon as a comparison). Lastly, the sauce was not distributed on the strips evenly or consistently.
On a positive note: the service was great, super friendly, attentive, polite, and friendly. I thought it was kind of strange that their 10-piece strip (for about $11) was the smallest portion they served. What do individual eaters get, 10 entire pieces for one person?!
This place is 3-stars overall as a chicken place -- but for a BonChon location -- this is only 1-star. I was really disappointed that the food quality was not on par with the midtown location. I can live with a smelly restaurant, but don't cut corners and serve flat-patty chicken tender strips.
I won't be returning.
