Rated 5 stars honestly, barbers are very professional and take their time cutting your hair. I have been a consistent customer for months now and yet to be disappointed. Highly recommend this shop.

- where is all that free beer you talk about?
- also the white trash so called female workers have such a nasty attitude
- when there are kids and mothers present you dont curse or talk about how good that weed you bought yesterday was
- avoid this barber shop at all cost unless you want to be treated bad.

This is a honest review of True Gents Barbershop on Victory Blvd. I would advise you to avoid this place as much as possible; and if you have to go, don't bother with their "famous" head massage and do not let Joseph cut your hair.
.....

After driving by True Gents a few times, and visiting their nice and easy-to-use website, I decided to give it a try. Walking in at first, I was very excited to experience the "classic, old school atmosphere" that barbershops used to have--but I was disappointed.
.....

The website states that they "will give you advice, serve you drinks, give you a warm lather, and a hot towel to start". I must say that none of those were true, and I will go into detail for each one.
.....

First of all, advice should be avoided--when I asked Joseph how long he has been on Staten Island, he answered 47 years and it used to be a good place. The conversation later continued with inappropriate language and racist remarks--definitely do not let your kids go there.
.....

Second, drink were not served, and never even offered from what I can see. Third, the warm lather must be from the shampoo wash, that is also part of their "famous" head massage. It cost $5.00 for a ten minute massage that takes place when your head is drenched in shampoo. You can skip this part because the massage was nothing more than letting Tiffany play with your hair--go to Chinatown if you want a head massage, those ladies are not as sweet and pretty as Tiffany, but it will be a real massage. Lastly, there was no hot towel to start, only a dry one for after the wash.
.....

Now to the hair cut: I asked to have half-an-inch off the top and trim the sides and back. Joseph then asks if there was an occasion, so I answered first day on the job and I need to wear a suit. He quickly answered, "that's all you needed to say" and turned my chair to face the TV. I ended up with a buzz cut--definitely not professional and fit for a suit-and-tie for me. After I noticed all my hair being cut off, I asked and he said that it will stand up if it is long--BUT that's how I like my hair! I didn't argue and didn't even bother to look at it in detail until I got home. Now looking closely, not only were my sideburns uneven, there were patches of hair of all different lengths. I will try to post some photos on Yelp, or you can email me for them--it is quite unbelievable.
.....

Overall, the décor was nice and the chairs were comfortable. That is all that I could confirm with all the hype that's provided on their website. For sure, I will not be visiting again, and will continue to advise others not to. Of the many barbers there, one of them seemed to be very decent and focus on the details--the others (once again, especially Joseph), not so much. That's probably why the others had people waiting but Joseph didn't. Owners should really think about whether keeping him on the team is beneficial for the business.
.....

I now have to go find another place to fix the mess. Friends of mine have recommended Gents New York in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Also. there are many places where you can get a hair cut in the vicinity, I hope you make the right choice.
