Toast

Called ahead to see how long it was going to be and she told me "it was against the policy to give up that information over the phone." How do you expect to have business when you don't have good customer service? Haven't even went and don't plan on it.

My wife and I went to Toast just today and were terribly disappointed. I ordered the veggie burger, which itself was very acidic, as though they used vinegar to make it. The bun was stale and twice as big as the burger, and the sweet potato fries were undercooked and hard. At our waiter's recommendation, my wife ordered the eggs benedict -- a brunch staple that Toast should have served up handily. Her hash browns were cold and overcooked and the hollandaise was bland, which made the whole dish mediocre at best. Our two sons had pancakes, which were spongy and uneventful. The younger barely touched his food.

Although our waiter himself was friendly and apologetic about the wait, they were obviously understaffed. My wife had to get a menu herself, which we all had to share. But the worst part of our experience was the nauseating smell emanating from the basement, the door to which was right next to our booth. It was an odor that I can liken only to decay, or more likely an unemptied porta potty. The odor itself was enough to ruin the experience.

With so many restaurants serving a solid brunch in Montclair, I am amazed that Toast certainly did not meet the hype that has been swirling around it for the past year or so. We won't be returning.

I went to Toast with a few friends for brunch and we loved it. Great atmosphere & food. Friendly staff and service.

Possibly the most popular brunch destination in Montclair, NJ. The food is excellent, the service is polite and zippy, and the environment is on the loud side. Reminiscent of a NYC bruch spot, you can get some interesting plates here but be prepared to be very close to your neighbors.

Also, there is always a line at Sat/Sun brunch times so be prepared to wait half an hour or more. They can give you a text message when your table is ready.

Great spot to eat, just plan ahead.

DO NOT GO HERE! A friend and I who were interested in having a breakfast out of the norm decided to take a trip to Toast. We called ahead to see how long the wait was as we didn't have too much time. When we called to ask how long the wait for 2 was the response we got was, "We don't give wait times over the phone but the wait is not long if any. We can seat 2 easily."

We decided to take the trip and when we arrived roughly 15 minutes later, the snobby red haired gentleman at the door said, "Wait is 45 minutes." When I advised him that we called roughly 15 minutes earlier, he said it didnt matter.

Their clear "BAIT AND SWITCH" makes it obvious that their food doesn't carry the day. People, much like myself, have no problem waiting so long as the food and service is good. Left and went to Bluestone Coffee Co. which is always wonderful and a great staff to say the least.
