My experience as a student at Sunset Park High School has been pretty good overall. Teachers try to understand students as best as they can and they really care about our ideas. The work we get may be a bit challenging but it's a better way for us to learn instead of being babied all our life. Students who complain about their grades are usually the ones who still want the teacher to hold their hand. I feel like the teachers really do try to prepare us for college, and they should be respected more than they really are. I'm no perfect student but I respect my teachers and try my best, and I believe SPHS is a way better school than what people think it is.

As a Junior there at the school, I believe that the school has good potential in teaching students how to perform better. However, It's all gone to waste in certain things we dont need for things like certain afterschool activities and what not. And really all we do is just something similar to boot camp. You walk in, work very hard for the regents and lessons that will later be useless in life. Sadly that's really it. What makes it worst is that a huge majority of the students there can really care less about literally anything that is being said to them. I'm saying this by what I have witnessed and what I have expierenced. If the teachers and staff there actually gave a damn about the students they're teaching then yes i believe the school has a better future ahead of them. In the mean time, If you want to be apart of the school, Just keep your expectations of "Great learning and success" at a minimum.

I am a current Senior that attends Sunset Park High School and from my past 4 years in this school, it's safe to say that I will miss this school after June. This school has helped me grow as an individual and citizen of the community. The school really cares about student voice. I am part of the National Honor Society, School Leadership Team, Student Leadership Team, Captain of the PSAL Badminton Boys Varsity Team, Manager of the PSAL Boys and Girls Basketball, Softball, and Baseball Teams and much more. This school gives you the opportunity to lead clubs. You can take college courses as a high school student. We just got NEW AP courses. Every year we get new sports teams. This year it was Soccer Girls JV, Baseball Boys Varsity, and Wrestling Boys Varsity. I feel very safe while in school. Teachers would give me the support I need and always available for tutoring. They are very welcoming! This school is slowly expanding and no doubt will be one of the best schools in NYC in the years to come. I recommend this school to any student.

The school has so much potential to be a good school, but it will never be able to reach that succession because it will not be able to adjust to the needs of an ever advancing society. The schools main objective is just to have students pass its regents, which is what I have personally seen. It does not strive to push anyone because most people cannot reach past what they are shown. This is a biased response based on my experience from one community, but why do I have this bias response? Because the floors do not mix and merge. Each of the school's floors is just isolated from any other community and therefore are basically separate schools. As it is now, the school will not be able to support the policies that De Blasio has proposed and will inevitably catch itself in a loop of just barely doing enough. To add on even more NOTHING is told to anyone, yes there may be an honors society (I am currently the 11th grade president) but even we are struggling to make ourselves know to the school. The school pushes you to join after school activities just so that you can have a chance to experience ANYTHING that the school lacks in, such as additional science programs (I.E. Urban Barcode Project, STEM: Environmental Stewardship). In addition we do not offer a large amount of AP courses, no honors and if you really do want to challenge yourself, you will likely have to join some form of after school activity. On top of that, the electives (2) that the school offers are only meant to aid your core classes (1 class) and the other is just random. You have NO CHOICE in electives, and if you are joining from a honors background, any high school programs you took in middle school are essentially nullified and you have to take the classes again. Yes you can argue that the school is new, but what happened to all the money the school had? It has disappeared and now although it is being said that there are attempts to fix what has happening NOTHING is being told to anyone, and because of that as far as I am concerned, nothing is happening to fix this school. I would advise any parent to look for a different school.
