hey guys its pretty funny how white people are so scared of black people WTF but still its a great place

Lost my first post so I'll keep it short. Runny burnt pizza, cold chicken parn, chewy tough burger, cheese steak with burnt onions, saved seats at the bar for people not there, overwhelmed staff who will asked you to move to a booth if your party is four or less and unfriendly bar service who save seats at the bar for people not there and seem angry for asking. Seemed convenient. Five times there with one take out as my friend likes the pizza. Six times disappointed. Never, never again. Oak Barrel Pub (formerly Gaffers) and Egan and Son have far better fare and treat you like are glad to see you and want you to come back. Overrated is too good a word for this ....award winning garbage.

One of the best around, definitely the best in Essex County. I want to comment on the previous review by Sushi Fresh and his/her opinion that race is an issue there.
First off that place has been around longer than you in a predominately African American area and thrives there. Also most of the employees and patrons are of African American decent including all other walks of life that have frequent Star Tavern for generations. So take your anger and biased opinion elsewhere.

The first time i ate there it was take out so i didnt get to experience the service, but i went over the weekend and i must so the service there is sooo trash. I hate to throw race in the mix but finding someone to help seat us was impossible verses other people who worked in and was seated right away, and when confronted about it all they can say was "oh we didnt see you guys standing there". Even when askin the waitress for a suggestion we were greeted with shrugged shoulders and a "idk I guess the pizza" truly a horrible experience and im never EVER goin back there. P.S the pizza wasnt even that great, the mushroom pizza wasnt bad but wouldn't recommend it

Place was packed. Aside from the fact it took about an hour to get seated and receive the food, and aside the fact we were then asked to move to a booth to make space for a larger party, I have to say the food was disappointing.

The mandarin salad was mostly iceberg lettuce, with a little bit of mandarin and almond on it. The pizza tasted ok, but the thin crust was a little soggy and had to be eaten with a fork and knife.

On the whole was not impressed. I had better Pizza regionally, and I am not necessarily even comparing it to artisan pizza places. This pizza was a descent middle of the road quality, but nothing I would imagine would bring awards. I found the popularity of the place frankly mystifying!
