One of the grand-daddy boatclubs of NYC! I especially love their growing canoe program, but they have kayak and sailing too. Lots to learn here and located in a beautiful section of Jamaica Bay.

I read about this place in a book. Found out that they have free open kayak trips in the summer, so my wife and I got up early one Saturday and joined one.

That first paddle out onto Jamaica Bay blew me away. I never would have thought something like that existed in the New York City limits.

We joined the club a month later and have been a regular active members ever since.

We joined so we could get out there when ever we wanted and the dues include use of the excellent club boats and a cabin in Harriman State Park. There is a small fee to use the cabin, but a very good and inexpensive way to get out of the city.

They are a very active club. Kayak, canoe, sailing, rowing, racing and other activities. They even have winter activities like kayak instruction at a swimming pool, sailing classes, hikes, presentations and even winter kayak and sailing trips for those that have the expensive winter gear.

They cost more than most small boat clubs, but they are more active and membership includes the use of club equipment, which offsets the dues. If you use the club for more than a few times a year, it is worth the money.

The boat storage rates are less expensive than other area clubs for those that have their own equipment.

They are a cost effective way to escape the city and a great source of recreation. The dues are very reasonable for what you get.

I guess I am biased since I've been a member for several years:-)

This is a hidden secret. So, don't come here and find out what this is all about. Let's say it is better than buying a few acres upstate New York and building your pied de terre and driving up every weekend. Minutes away, you launch into the ocean preserve.
