They are charging me continuously for 3 months even after my membership was cancelled. I have to call them every month for this. And you cant get hold of the manager...bad management...

The new changes are for the better. More barbells and better maintenance of the equipment. The gym is decent with 2 squat racks and a bunch of benches and a training area for boxers and the like...all for a decent price.

I try the gyms around woodbridge, perth amboy, carteret and edison but the one I enjoy the most every workout I have. Is retro. Retro has all the machines to make your workout better ...

My time at Retro has been interesting, to say the least. I started at the beginning of last summer and I enjoyed my time there until the Fall when the gym went through a little management problem. The former manager, Jenny, treated her staff as her own children and treated members with respect and decency. She had compassion and understood that life wasn't fair, so she took that attitude while dealing with each and every single one of the members that had a problem. The current manager, Terrin, is quite the opposite. When he replaced Jenny in the Fall, there were a lot of promises that never seemed to come true. His focus is to clean up the gym and he took such pride that the gym was clean during the hours he was there. He had no problem barking orders at his staff to replace bottles and paper towel rolls, even fired someone for forgetting once. Terrin's worst flaw is his dealing with accountability. There were times he would come back to the front desk after circling the floor and tell me that there were water bottles and paper towels all over and that I should go pick them up.I would sometimes sit there and look at him in amazement because he would tell me such nonsense at 5 pm on a Friday when I was working by myself and when the juice bar had 3 people waiting for shakes and two smart members waiting at the front desk to cancel their memberships.
ISo to the people who have gotten this far in the review, you can obviously see that I am completely biased against Terrin. Everything above is the truth which is why it's so negative. I can go on and on and recall my memory for every immoral and indecent thing that Terrin has done to myself, my former employees, the members, and even our trainers, but he's not worth it. A guy like this puts himself and his reputation on such a high pedestal even though the only thing holding up his shitty qualities is his over inflated ego which is why I'm not wasting my time on his pathetic self.
So, the reason why I am no longer at Retro Fitness. After opening the gym for months, I decided that I wanted to work the prime hours (Late afternoon-early night) so that I could be more involved with gym itself as well as selling memberships, which would eventually lead to me making more money. After 6 long weeks, I was finally told that I was no longer responsible for opening the gym, however, management refused to give me any other hours. I insisted on fixing the problem with haste, however, that word serves no purpose to these people. I only had to stay longer after an employee meeting and argue with upper management for an hour until we could figure out a way to put me in the schedule for about 25 hours a week. This lasted for a couple weeks until recently I was totally taken off the schedule without reason. I was sent home multiple times after sitting in an hour of traffic and no one could send me a courtesy text or call telling me I wasn't needed. I understood that schedules change and some people lose a couple hours here and there, but when you take an employee who has been "employee of the month" multiple times as well as someone who was at the top of the boards in selling shakes, memberships, and pro shop goods completely off the schedule, one must think that he is being fired. I was told I wasn't needed ten times, Monday through Friday for two straight weeks until I finally decided enough was enough.
First, I want to thank all of the members who I became friends with. From the early morning group to the afternoon, to the night, thank you for getting to know me, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to get to know you. I want to thank my fellow employees for always making time go by a little bit faster. I also need to thank the trainers who were always there to joke around and give great advice. I also want to thank everyone in the Wellness Center who always keep it 100.
And don't take too much stock in the previous 5-star reviews, Terrin gives members free pre-workout as a bribe if they write a 5 star review in front of him.

This Gym was good until a Manager named "Terrin" (tall black man with short curly hair) took over management of it. I'm only describing him incase i got his name wrong. I joined because they had a decent boxing area and because my cousin worked out here. He had brought me here so we could work out together doing some boxing work. I even got my sister-in-law and brother to join this gym and we worked out here for about 3 years with not many problems regarding staff or other paying customers. I would hold the boxing pads for family helping them get in shape and they would do the same for me except for my sister in who didn't know or liked holding the pads. I also would meet up with some friends (guys and girls) who liked boxing and liked hitting the pads or the heavy bag once in awhile. Then this guy Terrin took over management and my first encounter with him I was immediately questioned and pretty much harassed for "training" with my Cousin and brother that day. Thats right I was HARASSED. I was approached on 2 separate days in the same week! First I was questioned by Terrin and the Lead trainer there for working out with my family and friends. They ask me to go into the office so we could "talk". I responded with "is it that serious?". Terrin stepped in and was friendly at first, basically saying that, "they are not trying to lose money from trainers who aren't affiliated with the company he hires to come in and train people in this gym." First of all I am in NO WAY a Certified trainer nor do I advertise, claim or want to be. I was simply just simply working out with my family. Its was fun and we liked working out and helping/motivating each other to get in shape. They even offered me a job because they had customers asking about boxing apparently but I declined right away because I just wouldn't want to train random people and also I work a fulltime and partime job and wouldn't have time to workout for myself. I also told him that I'm just working out with my family who was my brother and cousin that day. A couple days later I came in with my cousin and sister-in-law and a friend happened to be there. I wanted to hold the pads for my sister and friend first before my cousin held the pads for me so I worked with them first. Upon seeing this Terrin waved me over. He didn't look happy so I asked what going on? He said he was "INSULTED" for "training 2 new people". Again I am not a trainer. He was very unprofessional with his approach. I told him that was my sister-in-law and friend. He responded with "I only had PERMISSION to train my brother and cousin." I needed permission?!?! At this point I pretty much had enough of Terrin harassing me for working out with my family and friends and said I was canceling my contract there today. NEVER EVER have I had to deal with this at any gym. Its one with thing to fix your staff to make your gym better but never do you harass the paying customers. I highly recommend you DO NOT join this gym. The policy is just plain ridiculous if you want to workout with people and I talked to some of my gym buddies before I left and they also had problems with Terrin questioning working out with their wives, girlfriends and their friends! My Sister-in-law and brother also cancelled there contracts. Save your money and look for another gym where you aren't looking over your shoulder and questioned for working out with people you know. 11/30/14
