Belarmino Rico, La Pola's owner, long ago earned the title of "King of the Cuban Sandwich" or Cubano. The restaurant is named after the small town in Spain where Rico lived before emigrating to Cuba and learning how to make the hot, crispy sandwich in his uncle's bodega in Central Havana.
In a 2003 article for The Record, then in Hackensack, I rated La Pola's Cubano best among 11 sandwiches I sampled at North Jersey restaurants.
The restaurant is closed today after delivering hundreds of Christmas orders for whole pigs, ribs, pork and hams, plus all of the Cuban side dishes -- an annual tradition. Rico also is taking orders for New Year's celebrations. (I wrote this in December).

Went here because my son said they make the best Cuban sandwich. But as I ordered the sandwiches I found myself looking at a roach racing across the counter. Done never going back.
