We have had our child at this Kumon Learning Center now for almost three years. We enrolled our child in Kumon to help prepare him for Kindergarten. We were concerned about his level of interest and motivation for learning, and his preschool teachers expressed concern about his readiness for the elementary academic level.
The introduction of new concepts within the Kumon class sessions, tied in with the independent practice and strong reinforcement that my child has been gaining at home through Kumon homework has enabled him to achieve consistently strong grades in school. He has started off ahead in school right off the bat, His school spelling and math work are still quite easy for him. He has been making gains in his reading skils as well with the regular literacy focus of Kumon class and homework. Kumon is important in keeping him on task, and ready for upcoming school coursework.
The director and staff at this center are clear in their guidance, and provide students with different levels of positive reinforcement for strong performance. They also tell students and families straight out when your child is not performing up to par. They are also given negative reinforcement in discouraging pour behaviors and study habbits. They will work to address any concerns together with you. I would highly recommend Kumon to others seeking their child's educational preparation/enrichment, or to help students practice essential reading/math concepts to secure their understanding.
One area which could be included is the integration of some concreet manipulatives like blocks and such to illustrate any math concepts for students having difficulty with number relations or operations on numbers.
Overall, I'd rate Kumon with a 4.5 out of 5.
