after the first visit, here is how i felt ppl . the process is over complicated. they don't even have a sign to show ppl where to get the waiting ticket which is one the first floor. 2nd, ppl who are working there have big attitude to applicants which is very rude on so many levels. 3rd, they should have ppl on the floors to help applicants to translate or something else.it's really hard to get help inside of it. 4th, i downloaded the paper from the official website which they told me i need to fill out the other form again which is totally different from their website. it's wasting my times. this is my experiences about it. it's a horrible place to visit it. shame on it/ never want to go back again. ever/never/////////

I absolutely have no idea how the past reviewers have been actually treated. I, for one, received great service here. I didn't receive PERFECT service, but for what I came here for, I got what I needed.

I completely understand and sympathize with those who were confused by the website (because, like most other mainland Chinese websites, the information is dodgey and not well organised at all points.) However, when you do find the information, you are clearly told what you need to have with you. I witnessed people who were getting turned away with legitimate reasons backed up by the official sources, but I, thankfully, found the information and used it to my benefit. Finding the pieces of info, such as requiring the applications to be filled out by computer, having the correct amount of visa photos, photocopies of my passport and the required supplemental documents took only an extra bit of effort to find but the reward was great in the end when all was done.

I experienced no rudeness by any of the personnel at the consulate. From start outside with the security personnel to the interior staff of the office, I was treated with dignity and respect as I had expected. They made sure I understood everything before proceeding and I got my visa within a week (regular service.) I'm glad I didn't experience a problemm, especially because I had done it just over a week prior to leaving for my trip to Asia (and, of course, China.)

If you know that the New York City Chinese Consulate General serves where you reside and you find out everything you need to properly prepare for the application process, then you will have an absolutely smooth application process.

Like many others, I was afraid to get a bad a experience after reading all the terrible reviews. it took me 10-15 minutes to get in and out. Nobody was rude to me. I wasn't expecting they'd be super polite to me either. It's a cultural thing like someone said. The consulate officer took 5 minutes to review my documents. Didn't ask me anything, just at the end she said in shy voice, come pick it up in a week. that's all. If you are an American, they like you already.

So this is what I took me:

1- Original Passport with photocopy and 1 passport photo.
2- Visa Application (pdf) I downloaded it and filled it out using adobe acrobat and printed it out.
3- Hotel Booking
4- Airline Booking
5- My Train ticket Beijing to Xi'an (only if you travel locally, just in case, but you don't need it. )

This place reminds me of what I experienced growing up in China. The visa officers act like you owe them an apology by getting a visa. Typical bureaucrats with the worst attitude. If you want to call them beforehand to ask questions, there is no chance someone at the Consulate will pick up the phone. It will ring forever……. Then when you get to the Consulate, you are told you are missing this or that. So you go back home to get the missing paper and try again tomorrow. You don’t get your visa on the same day since the Consulate no longer offers the expedited service. So you have to go back there again another day to pick it up. So essentially you end up going there three times before getting a visa. Welcome to the Communist China! If you are a Chinese citizen and want to get some paperwork done such as notary public, you will be treated like third class citizen even worse than a non-Chinese. It almost appears that the Consulate officers finally get a chance to scold, ridicule, and sometimes curse their own fellow countrymen like they are always treated at home in China. Welcome back to the Communist China!
