My parents have lived in West Orange, New Jersey since 1986 and since then I have used this Dry Cleaner either whenever I was in town or during the long stretches when I lived with my parents after law school and after business school and for the past 5 years as I had to move back to help take care of my Mom. The woman who works at the Register, and whom is basically the “face” of the store, could not be nicer. She remembers me and always makes it a hassle-free transaction and she always makes sure I take advantage of local coupons and whatnot. With the quality of Dry Cleaning being pretty much the same from store-to-store, such a personal touch is necessary, welcomed and much appreciated. HOWEVER, I recently had such bad dealings with the OWNER of the store and with his SON, that I will NEVER USE THIS DRY CLEANER AGAIN. In short, I operate a bona-fide Non-Profit Charity for a disease which has disabled me. I politely approached the Owner’s son about possibly making a tax-deductible contribution given all the business I had conducted at his store over the years and I also GAVE HIM a free T-Shirt from the Organization and he very “gruffly” told me “NO.” I don’t expect anyone to contribute to my Charity and if they do not, I never make that an issue. It would be nice, but everyone has their own problems so I don’t ever take it personally. But I was “put off” by the gruff and dismissive manner in which he addressed me when every other vendor I approached was at least very nice. This annoyed me but it did not stop my patronage of this store. This next transaction with his father, the Owner, DID because it was so distasteful and I decided to write about it on Yelp. My 80-year old mother who has severe mobility and vision issues, asked me to go into the Dry Cleaner and ask the VERY NICE tailor to simply move the closing buttons on several pairs of shorts. I guess my Mom had gained some weight and she needed the extra room. The tailor did the first batch of my Mom’s shorts which I had brought in and my Mom could not be happier. We were charged $1.00 for each pair of shorts and it took the tailor a minute or two to move the button. I brought in a second bath of shorts for the same reason and again my Mom was thrilled and the price was $1.00 for each pair of shorts. A few days later my Mom asked me to bring in a few more pairs of shorts but this time no one was in the store but the Owner. He took my clothes as I explained what the tailor had been doing and how happy my Mom was with the results. Then I said we were being charged $1.00 for each pair of shorts. I must have brought in 10-12 pairs of shorts by then – and I told the Owner that – and he responded almost robotically, “$1.50 for all shorts – that is the lowest charge we have.” I thought he may have misunderstood me so I repeated my Mom’s satisfaction with the tailor and the $1.00 price. He just looked at me. I motioned to take my clothes back over the $.50 difference and he didn’t care. So I took the shorts back. A few days later I stopped in to see the very nice woman at the cash register to explain just in case there was a miscommunication. She volunteered to talk to him and said she’d call if there was any change. She did not call so this arrogant store owner lost a steady customer who probably spent THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS at his store over the past 10 years or so all because of 50 cents. PLEASE DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS STORE, THE OWNER DOES NOT APPRECIATE IT.
