Terrible service, and the food is way overpriced. Charged 28 for an imitation crab food plate. Typical Russian scam , except this one is not with insurance fraud , but food.

I just cannot find words to describe my experience. The worst service ever. The food is not simple bad, it's shamelessly overpriced. Flies are all over. The dirty cutlery. Voted the worst restaurant of the NY state.

Coworker wanted to show us her hood, so she took us on a weekend beach trip from Manhattan to Brighton Beach for a beach and russian food day.
After laying out for a few hours, we went to Volna on the Boardwalk that had views of the beach. Lovely. We had a huge group of 15, and they accommodated for us (we also had a reservation).
My belief is, come here with a large group, and more importantly, come with a Russian. My Russian coworker went on an ordering spree for us (in Russian) so no decisions made on my end, but we all enjoyed EVERYTHING that was ordered, and we devoured it.
Started out with a simple greek salad with a light vinaigrette. My favorite came up next, which was a salmon roe with crepes on the side. The saltiness of the roe plus the sweet-egginess of the crepe was a beautiful balance, and I just wanted to have more.
Also had the Georgian Pizza (Khajapuri), which was basically a ton of melted cheese on top of light fluffy bread, was great to have a slice, but I wouldn't have been able to handle a whole order on my own. The borscht here was also great, the had a great sweetness from the beets and loved the soft cabbage, I could have drank the whole bowl!
Continued with a fried fish, wasn't spectacular, but still legit - ours came with the head, normal for me since I'm used to it from Chinese restaurant, freaked out one of my coworkers who was nervous about the head staring at him. Finally we finished off with beef stroganoff, I actually loved the mashed potatoes that it came with more than the beef itself. I was also pretty full by this time. Loved the potato dumplings, which basically tasted like boiled chinese dumplings with potatoes inside.
Last entree had was the lamb and chicken shish kebobs - thought the lamb was on the drier side, but the chicken was moist and tender.
Finished the off with dessert, their russian napoleon cake was THE BOMB - not too sweet but layers and layers of creme and dough, it was perfect. Everyone was fighting to eat the last bite.
The bill came out pretty hefty, we each paid $35 per person, but for the amount of food we got, it was great. When I first looked at the menu myself, I was completely overwhelmed, and I think I really enjoyed the experience because I was able to try so many different dishes. If I had to choose just one dish, it probably wouldn't have been as exciting of an experience.
Oh, as everyone mentioned, this place is BYOB. I just didn't realize that people BYOB - hard liquor - and take shots before 5PM. But hey, you know, when in Brighton Beach, do as the Russians do and have your meal with vodka.
