So I've never been to this place, but I do know Apple service and support intimately. I'd like to address some of these comments:

James - if they dismantled your actual drive without using a clean room, then that's extremely poor service and unsafe in many ways. However, it seems unlikely that someone would try to do this at a retail location. If you are so very wise about this subject, why didn't you bring you mission critical yet failed drive to one of the select few real professionals in the game? Also, if you are so wise about data recovery, why didn't you have a backup? My most important documents are stored in 3 locations, and my most important media is backed up on a Raid 5. If I lose data, it's my fault...not a store's. Also, I'm sure you signed an agreement saying that they're not responsible for your data before they tried to recover it.

Matt- This store is an Apple authorized service provider. This means the store can only perform warranty repairs unless the unit is out of warranty. Any apple authorized provider should not upgrade your computer's HD with a part that doesn't not carry apple's warranty. This service would void the warranty on your machine. These are merely Apple's corporate policies and have nothing to do with this individual store. Also, $150 dollars is usually a standard bench fee for more invasive procedures, which you admitted yourself was difficult.

Tony- you're right about anybody can send their drive to a professional recovery service. However, if your machine is still under warranty, you'd have to have an apple authorized technician to extract the drive and replace it with a warranty part prior to the drive being sent to a data recovery service. Most people would go to a place like Mikey's because they're computer is "not working" and they don't know why it isn't. They're are providing a diagnosis and service options. Most people are not computer nerds and don't know what is causing their computer to malfunction.

ja- actually, lateforprom is right, nobody knows what is coming out months before therelease date. ESPECIALLY not a third party vendor like Mikey's. If you were going to invest this much money in a product like a new computer, why didn't you do the research before laying cash down on the counter? There are so many good resources out there to help you make an educated purchasing decision. I would hope that when you buy a car that you don't ONLY listen to the car salesman. Most people read consumer reports and edmunds.

I'm don't want to say that Mikey's is amazing or perfect, because I've never been there. However, I do think that all these comments are exceptionally ignorant. Everybody is harshly accusing this store of doing something wrong when it seems like a majority of the issues that people have had with Mickey's stems from their personal lack of knowledge.

A note about data recovery: People are born and then they die, the sun rises and then it sets, and hard drives work and then they fail. When a hard drive fails and you lose data, it's your fault for not backing it up. It's not the fault of the drive manufacturer, not apple, not any other company. It's your fault. The drive has a warranty, but your data does not. When you bring your failed hardware to a place like Mikey's, Apple, or any other data recovery place, you agree at the time you hand the drive over that you may never get information back. If a drive is severely damaged, send it to the pros like DriveSavers and expect to refinance your home to do so. However, there is nothing wrong with letting retail stores try to do software data recovery for you.

I'm giving 5 stars to Mickey's because I have sympathy after these A-holes used the store as a whipping boy for their own lack of intelligence.
