I went to the Blue Note for the first time this week with a buddy of mine to see John Scofield and band playing. I was excited to see Scofield and to visit this legendary jazz club! I've been to most of the other major jazz clubs in Manhattan and had many good times. so my expectations were high. Too bad!
The Blue Note was jam packed, and I mean JAM PACKED! I can hardly believe the fire department would allow that many people in that space. Our seats were some of the last available as far as I could tell, and so not great - maybe our fault for arriving 10 minutes before show time.
Scofield and co. were great.... as far as I could tell, but between the endless coming and goings of the wait staff with food and drinks - and I mean like every couple of minutes we were disturbed by a waitress or server - and the non-stop loud conversations of german tourists on neighboring tables (we didn't pay to listen to your conversations, people!), we were not able to enjoy the show. It was very frustrating! The MC announced at the beginning that they have a 'quiet policy' during the show, but they did nothing at all to enforce it, leaving me to ask our noisy neighbors to quiet down twice, to little effect.
I was also shocked at the price of the mandatory drinks (you have to spend a minimum amount on food and/or drinks, which is normal in these clubs). A very small gin and tonic was $15, and a bottle of beer was $9. Even by New York standards that's expensive!

Fried chicken dinner special was delicious and decent price for $20. 2 pieces with collard greens and a beer. Nice ambience.

Tried and true. Love this place and go here often for lunch. The Bacon Bread is unreal but not on the menu so ask to see if they have any available. I also like sitting downstairs with a larger group. The smell from the bakery is amazing!

Have been going here for a few years. First for business lunches and then for the food and the bread. Fantastic every time. Yes it's small and intimate, but worth it, especially for a date.
