Five years ago I walked into the emergency room not feeling well. I stood in line and waited like everyone else. I saw the triage nurse, told her my symptoms. I was taken for an EKG to find out that I had had a heart attack the day before. I was rushed to the OR and given a stent to open a blood value that had collapsed. I spend two night under the Bellevue ICU care. I found the staff to be very professional. I felt that they cared about me and took very excellent care of me.

I have nothing but praised for Bellevue Hospital. They took care of me even when I could not pay my bill. The finance office worked with me, they lowered by bill and gave me payment options.

I now have insurance, and I am still a patient with Bellevue. I have the option of choosing my medical facility and I choose to stay with Bellevue.

This hospital has prestige but the service is the worse. The orderly, auxiliary nurse n most are not nurse just helper, some of the nurse are good. The doctor are student in the fourth or fifth year of medical school there is not an attending Doctor on duty. The students do not communicate with patients. The ER is another problem they make you sign so many paper that most people do not what they signing.

I went into ER at NYU Langone on 4.4.14 to receive care. After verifying my insurance coverage, I waited for doctor, tests, results, advice etc in the hospital corridor. I never left the corridor except to get an MRI and return back to the corridor to wait again. Months after my insurance paid all my ER bills, I got a surprise bill for $410.00 from Dr MARSIA VERMEULEN for an ‘office visit’ on the same day. I called billing dept immediately telling them I never had an office visit; they said that I did. My insurance co. told me that i simply had to prove that the doctor billed me erroneously and they would cover it. I explained to different billing personnel that I never visited an office, that I was only in ER for the entire time, but each time they adamantly REFUSED to code the bill as part of the ER, and instead INSISTED it was an office visit.
Numerous calls, letters, and great amount of time later, time ran out. I can no longer continue the appeal. Meanwhile, I have been inundated with threats from a debt collection agency for non-payment of an office visit to Dr Vermeulen.
I would NOT go to or recommend Langone ER to anyone because I ended being a victim instead of getting care ‘only’. I’m sure an in-network doctor was available for the entire 7 hours I was there; yet no one asked or told me I would be billed for an out-of-network visit. I don’t even know who this doctor is or where her office is. Maybe in the corridor?
I discovered that a law has been passed in march 2015, which bars doctors from billing patients surprise bills. Doctors MUST ask if you accept to pay for out-of-network care. But last year, these doctors were billing erroneously and getting away with it. The law now protects patients from dishonest doctors, but it doesn’t protect me from the medical dishonesty that Dr Vermeulen slapped me on 4.4.14.
