In response:
This patient had no insurance and came to me for a simple diagnosis of DRY EYE. I prescribed Restasis, the drug of choice, which takes about 2-3 months to kick in, Alrex, a mild steroid which makes the eye more comfortable, and artificial tears. This is the standard of care.
She was impatient and came to my office 2 weeks later. I explained to her that she did not give the medicine enough time. She demanded to be examined. I said fine, but the exam is not free. She was stunned- she said she expected a "guarantee" when I examined her initially, and therefore all follow-ups should be free(!) I explained to her that no medical office on this planet gives guarantees, and that all medical offices are paid for follow-up exams, and that if she had insurance, her insurance would pay me for the exam and we would not be having this conversation. I told her that the vast majority of my exams are follow-ups, and they are not free. I explained that the Alrex drops were not causing her the problem- she simply needed to give the medicine more time. She refused to listen and walked out in a huff and posts this ridiculous review.
You should know that if this patient had told me that she was unable to pay due to financial difficulties, I would have been happy to see her. I never turn away a patient due to money. But I will not be insulted and be told I am not entitled to be paid.
