I'm not comfortable in "salon culture," but Tortola always makes you feel comfortable. My life requires a low maintenance approach and Jo is super respectful of that. Cuts my hair beautifully and adds spectacular, natural looking, and low maintenance highlights twice a year. This is the only salon I've ever gone back to more than three times. Tortola is one of the businesses that helped build TriBeCa -- it keeps up with the times, but is still part of the neighborhood. A gem.

I can't speak to popular trends and hypster expectations. However, my spouse and I have been going to Tortola for many years and are very happy with the high level of quality, professionalism, and value that this establishment provides. They are a bedrock in Tribeca.

I have been a client for years. But each and every time I go I am reminded of how creative and gifted an artist Jo is when it comes to color. I simply cannot say enough about his ability to turn my mousy brown (now riddled with grey) hair into a glorious mane of auburn glory. I am only sorry I cannot post a picture on here because seeing is believing, but I have had many strangers stop me on the street to compliment the color! What I love about Jo is that he "sees" what will work with my coloring and eye color and not just give me a color that is loud and not in harmony with my lifestyle. I get a gorgeous color and feel beautiful from the moment I sit in the chair until my next touch up - thank you Jo! xxox

Life long customer: Tortola is my home away from home. Not only are Jo and Tommy, the clever stylists who own it, incredibly nice, generous with their time and immensely talented, but it is a beautifully designed hair salon that makes me feel at peace the moment I slip into one of their stylish robes. Jo has been cutting my hair exclusively for 30 years and is now also my colorist. Recently, while having breakfast with one of my oldest friends, I mentioned my color and my friend said, mouth slightly agape: "That isn't natural?!"
I love what Jo does for me and I love this place. Try it yourself and you'll never leave! Shaye

Beware of all the 5 star reviews.Whenever there is a bunch of great review written close together they are most likelu false.
The following is a detailed and completely true account of my experience at Tortola salon.
I had a long-term extremely talented hairdresser who retired from the business for personal reasons. I was in search of a new hairdresser and had my hair brutally over-processed by an inexperienced hairdresser at another Tribeca salon.
In December '09 I went to Tortola for color correction. I saw the owner Jo. The appointment took about 2 hours because he SLOWLY did the hi-lites. The outcome was lighter than I would of liked but it was better than what I came in with. It was before Christmas so I brought him some chocolates as a present since he fit me into the schedule but I also saw him accept a tip from a client. It made me uneasy so I asked Jo about him accepting tips as the owner and he said that he does. Although I don't think salon OWNERS should take tips, tacky, I now felt obligated to do so and I gave him a 20% tip. In February ‘10 I had another appointment for hi-lites to continue the color correction. I had to reschedule my original appointment but then I ended up canceling it due to a blizzard school cancelation (no babysitter). When I came in a week later Jo had a bad attitude with me and did not talk at all so I tried but all conversation from him was very forced. I apologized about having to cancel because my child is only 5 and I didn't have anyone to leave him with. Jo said it was not a problem and that someone else had filled that time slot but there was a passive aggressive air about him. He very much overdid the hi-lites, even more than last time, and acted very offended when I very kindly said it was too light. I gave him another 20% tip anyway-felt pressured. I was very clear during my initial consultation about the fact that I wanted subtle natural hi-lites. After getting negative feedback from family and friends about the color of my hair, I called the salon to come in for a few low-lites to tone down the over-lightened hair. Jo begrudgingly put in the low-lites, which took only about 20 minutes and then he stated that I should find another colorist and not come back. This is extremely rude and unprofessional behavior. I would not have come back anyway because I didn't want my hair repeatedly over-lightened and he just didn't get the part about subtle hi-lites but he obviously has some ego issues.
The prices at Tortola are not low,$160 partial hi-lites with no blow-dry included. There is no luxury or pampering, just a basic salon, so it is actually high priced for what you get. It is not a place for the hip of Tribeca but is more of a mom and pop kind of place, only this one is a pop and pop business. The salon is clean but the atmosphere is very dull. The staff changed between the time I was there in December to the next appointment in February and quick employee turnover is never a good sign.
I have found a wonderful new colorist in GV.
