The Met is widely considered one of the best museums in the country. The permanent exhibits include Egyptian temples, ancient Roman ruins, wonderful sculptures, period rooms from a variety of countries and just about the best collection of uniforms and armor from around the world. The contemporary and traveling exhibits range from fashion to technology and beyond.
Dining is available on the premises, as are excellent gift shops. If you have the time, I would recommend a self guided audio tour.

By far, this is my favorite museum out of all the ones I have visited. I love art and history, so this museum is the perfect place for me. I would recommend looking at the map before you visit, though, as it can take a while to get through the entire museum. I personally love the Egyptian section and the European Paintings the best. It is also amazing how the admission fee is only a suggestion, so you only have to pay however much you can. That feature is something that not many museums have, but is amazing because it makes art accessible to all.

One of the best art museums in the world. Amazing collection of classical and modern art in a beautiful building in an amazing location. Largest collection of art in the world (supposedly) in a single location. The costume Institute usually hosts exhibitions here that are amazing. The temple of Dendor looking out on central park is the quintessential new York museum scene. Getting drinks on the rooftop bar in the summer is a must and provides you with a beautiful view of the park that gives you a brief escape from the chaos that is Manhattan. The members dining room usually has very nice lunch or early dinner options but is not in any way cheap.
