Truly a gem of the NYC museum community. Perched amid breathtaking views of the city and the Palisades, the museum has a wonderful diversity of medieval art.
They do a particularly good job at making it clear how important religion was to people at the time, from devotional statues and columns to jeweled reliquaries.

An extension of the met, the Cloisters are the place to go to see medieval Christian biblical art. The building itself was transplanted from different monasteries in Europe and rebuilt in New York. In the summers, there's also a garden where they grow plants that would have been consumed by the monks living in such a building.
Keep in mind that suggested donation means you can give as you wish, and if you come on Saturday and observe the Sabbath, you can get in easily without having to deal with money.

This was one of my favorite museums of the trip. The unicorn tapestries are amazing in person. The museum it's self is a castle - very neat. They had some interesting art and sculpture, and the grounds are very calming.

Such an incredible experience. Perched at a high elevation, at the tip top of Manhattan, this sprawling medieval estate is beautiful year round. With some permanent and rotating exhibits, the museum is always a visual joy to walk through and the grounds have great views, as well as are lush. My favorite part is the herb garden.

A fantastic and fascinating collection, housed in a gorgeous space. A great date spot or place to take visiting family and friends. The unicorn torture tapestries are a real conversation piece. Live music here is a special treat: it fills the spaces beautifully. And it's pay-what-you-want! You can't go wrong.
