If you thought you had to go to Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights to find a Reform synagogue, guess again. Beth Emeth (officially, Temple Beth Emeth v'Ohr Progressive Shaaray Zedek -- there have been a few mergers over the years) is the sole Reform congregation in Victorian Flatbush, and it celebrates its centennial in 2011. The congregation is diverse and dynamic, welcoming families and singles from all traditions. Interfaith families are full participants in the community.
Services are open to all and are conducted most Fridays at 8:30 (a 'classical Reform' worship experience, now transitioning from Union Prayer Book to contemporary liturgy) and Saturday mornings at 11:15 (the family/religious school service). Religious school is held on several afternoons and on Saturday morning, and goes from preschool age through Bar/Bat Mitzvah and confirmation.
Saturdays prior to services there is usually a Torah study session for adults or a speaker/lecture. Holiday and social celebrations are also held at temple. The synagogue participates in social action and Brooklyn Congregations United activities, and several members are active in the Brooklyn community choir, Shir Chadash.
The synagogue is housed in a beautiful building that includes function space available on a rental basis to the community. There is a preschool which shares the space.
