T Schreiber Studio

If you're willing, this studio is equipped with everything you need to become a great actor. T. Schreiber has that rare combination in acting teachers of being immensity knowledgeable, compassionate, intuitive, and understanding. He doesn't teach any one method, but rather is versed in all of the major American styles of modern acting and leads you through exercises to figure out which ones resonate most in your individual process. It is a safe environment where you are free to discover and explore and take risks. As a teacher he is constantly adding to his vast understanding of theatre and teaching styles and is a wealth of information on plays, monologues, actor biographies, and inspirational pieces of art to held broaden and deepen your exploration of character.

Wonderful acting training. I can't say enough about the quality of teachers and what I learned. The theatre offers high quality performances at an affordable price. A great find in NYC theatre. You will not be disappointed.

Studied at Schrieber for almost 3 months. Started with the beginning intensive then moved on to the 6 week conservatory. I had very mixed reviews.

Here is a little about my experience because when I was starting out, something like this would have gone a long way.

The beginning intensive was incredible and I could not wait to study further at schrieber. When I asked if I could move on to the 6 week conservatory, I couldn't have been more thrilled.

After having been told that the conservatory would be completely different than what I had just done in the beginning intensive...and under the expectation that the 6 week conservatory would be a little bit more extensive and rigorous I immediately signed up, thinking I was about to be enrolled in a serious drama conservatory .. $1,500 later I was extremely shocked to find myself in a complete repeat of the beginning intensive...

Instead of learning new things. I sat and relearned the same stuff I had just paid close to $800 for 2 weeks prior. It wasn't until week 4 of the 6 weeks that I had truly felt I had moved on to new material.

Teachers are all great at "acting" like teachers. Meaning they have their teaching "script" and just use the same analogies and advice every class.

I can't tell you how many times I heard the same story from my teacher, each time with different embellishments... how much time in class is purposely wasted listening to the teacher name drop "Jack Nicholson" or tell some self absorbed story about their career, just to fill time.

Not only that, but favorites are picked on day one... and if your unlucky enough to be on the less favorited side, you'll most likely be watching some one else act 2-3x's more than you do. So in a 4 hour class you'll probably spend 45 minutes listening to B.S recycled stories, 45 minutes aimlessly moving furniture or wasting time, 30 minutes on break, 15 minutes actually acting, then an hour and 45 just sitting there and watching other people act.

As for the "body dynamics" class, learning about energy and shagras? You really have to buy into it... Because it's basically all b.s. It's a pseudoscience that won't get you anywhere except touching a strangers sacrum... Look it up. There's no stage combat, no more than 2 actors at a time, nothing that really furthers you down the road.

Paige Clements' vocal class was, hands down, the best and most individually beneficial. Perhaps the only shining light in this whole thing.

If your planning on meeting Terry... Good luck, he is only focused on running the shows that the studio puts out and doesn't even know your teachers name let alone yours.

Not only that, but there is no industry exposure at all at schrieber unless you want to pay for it. So if your looking for an agent or want to showcase or anything, your out of luck.

The summer conservatory at Michael Howard gives you not only a industry exposure but also a full day of headshots. That alone is worth $1,500

I hope this helps somebody. It would have saved me $1500, but not only that would have given me 6 weeks to focus on something 10x's more productive.

I'm a new actor who started at T. Schreiber a year ago and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I was nervous about getting into acting because you hear about how some teachers break their students down but as a beginner, that type of instruction can be discouraging. I started with the Beginning Saturday Program with Pam Scott. I loved it because she's a very nurturing and encouraging teacher who imparts tons of knowledge and skills to her students in every class. You'll learn a lot and feel very safe taking risks. I've also had the opportunity to be taught by Bob Verlaque and Susan Pilar who substituted a few of my Scene Study classes when Pam couldn't make it and they were amazing as well. As you continue, you may find that you need a different type of instruction. The teachers here encourage you to do so. Not just within T. Schreiber but outside of it. Although I will probably try classes outside of T. Schreiber, I really love the faculty here and they will most likely become a mainstay in my life.

I have studied here for years and I love it! I keep coming back because they have a wide variety of classes and are nurturing and supportive of my craft. I never feel lost in the shuffle here like I did taking classes Stella Adler. There is a real community here. And the theatre is amazing, even if you don't study here come see a show!
