Substance Salon

I love this salon. I love that while your stylist is doing your hair, other customers can't just wander in and interrupt as she's cutting your hair. I had that problem at another salon and that's why I stopped going. They are very friendly and professional here. They offer you coffee, tea, etc. and it's a very relaxing atmosphere. They don't rush you while they cut your hair. They offer suggestions if you inquire. I really love going here and Brooke, my stylist, is an incredibly talented hair stylist. I received so many compliments on my recent haircut. Love it!

I usually have a great experience there. HOWEVER, I booked them for my wedding to do my hair, my mother's hair, and my bridesmaids and flower girl. I was NOT impressed at all, and the more I look at my pictures, the more disappointed I am, especially for how much money we paid. It's to the point where I may never go back. By the end of the CEREMONY, my hair was already falling apart! That is unacceptable! My hair was basically struggling to stay up (I had a low updo). My mother's hair was frizzy and did not last at all. Her hair was frizzy from the day before, so my mom expected her to blow dry it out a bit before curling (she has curly hair). But nope, she just curled it and barely sprayed hair spray (it was a weak hair spray at that). Her hair was so frizzy! Same for my other bridesmaids! A lot more curling could have been done and hairspray could have been used. And my flower girl's hair was terrible as well. None of the hair styles lasted. Again, unacceptable. I did not expect this, especially from this salon. I trusted them (or the stylist, Kris) to do a phenomenal job being that it was my wedding. And we are all extremely disappointed. I also felt terrible asking my girls to pay so much, for such poor quality. It was embarrassing. Think twice before booking for a wedding!!

This salon has easily provided the most enchanting salon experience I've ever had. After countless tragedies at salons in Upper Montclair and Upper Bergen County (which ended in tears and months of messy buns) I decided to look for a new salon. Substance is effortlessly classy and elegantly charming. The space is open and inviting; a crisp white interior is offset by daring black accents. The staff is incredibly cordial and accommodating and their work is professional. From simple "wash cut and dry" to glamorous updos, this salon is the perfect place for a uniquely exhilarating experience. The pricing is reasonable and they carry a great line of products. A must go.

Manny is the best most avant garde men's stylist I know. He's always abreast of the latest trends and tailors his cuts to your personality. I've been going to him since 2001 and never changed barbers. Good luck getting an appointment though, he's in high demand.

Substance Salon does a great job for men (and for women too, but I am a guy so my comments are from a guy's perspective). Yes. I know some guys may balk at the costs but you get what you pay for. If you want just a buzz cut with clippers than any barber or stylist will do. If you want to look your best than Substance is the right place for you. I get my hair done by Linda and Manny. My wife loves the job. And I am constantly getting compliments at work. Again, you get what you pay for. I recommend Substance without reservation. Try them.
