A cool little venue that books great acts. Friendly ticket-sellers, nice bar, and just an all-around pleasant small venue with theater style seats. I'd go back here happily.

So this is probably my new favorite venue in NYC for music - the atmosphere, acoustics and programming all have had me back 3 times in the past few months, most recently for an event that was part of their piano series.
The renovated basement space near the Broadway-Lafayette train stop is intimate, allowing the audience to interact with the performers. The opportunity to pick your own seat is great as well. The bar staff is casual, quick and helpful and the drinks are reasonably priced for a music venue.
I'll be regularly checking their schedule so I can go back to SubCulture.

Attended Mary Lambert show on September 20. What a sweet spot. Absolutely wonderful venue to see a show. Intimate theatre setting. All staff from the person checking me in, the bartender and a woman at the exit asking about my experience were warm and friendly.
I will definitely be checking out subculture again.
And Mary Lambert....your voice, your music, your poetry, your stories, your personality and your beauty...all I can say is you ARE the STAR!

SubCulture is right next to the 6, B,D, F, and M train stations (Bleeker Street for the 6, B'way - LaFayette for the B, D, F, and M trains). The hostess and security staff were very pleasant. There are two theaters (one street level, one lower level). The space downstairs is ample without being overwhelming or impersonal. There are times where you'll have to crane your neck to see around those seated in front of you. It is possible to get cellphone reception within the lower level, and there's a bar and a restroom too. Seating is pretty snug.
