Went there once and the ride back was pretty chilly.

The terminal has been renovated in the past decade. Clean and modern. The ferry is completely free and gives great views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and lower Manhattan.

Free public transportation from Staten Island to Manhattan and vice versa. Some tourists ride the ferry to view the Statue of Liberty from afar, also viewable is the whole length of Verrazano–Narrows Bridge.

An excellent way of seeing the Statue of Liberty is by ferry and it's free. The environment was nice and clean for family visit. Our first trip to NY.

Aside from the obvious routine public transit, here's a protip:
If you want to just see the Statue of Liberty without lining up and spending a long time at it, just take the Staten Island Ferry. It's free, and goes pretty close to Lady Liberty. Close enough to get a few nice pics.
Another protip: the stern of the boat provides an excellent view of the Manhattan skyline at night.
