I rescued a very sick feline that was dying with little hope of recovering and in great suffering. So, after speaking with someone from the city's animal control division, they suggested I contact this vet, and so I and called them and asked for help. I wanted only to end the animal's suffering and put it out of its misery. They quoted me a fee of $190 to euthanize the animal. I told them it was not my own pet, but only a very sick and dying animal, and that I was only trying to help it.
I then asked them how much it would cost to euthanize the animal and let me take care of the disposal of the carcass, and their price was $170. I know a little about what the actual cost to the vet is, to euthanize an animal and then toss it into a trash dumpster.
I asked them if they could show some compassion for a very sick, dying animal that was suffering, and euthanize the animal for a lower price which I could afford and would have been willing to pay, but they firmly refused and began citing laws about stray animals, and that I had to bring the animal to the animal shelter (which I had already contacted, and who told me they could not euthanize the animal for at least another 3 days, and referred me to this vet).
In fact, it is this vet that performs the euthanization of animals for the Paterson Animal Control, and it appears that he is in business in that city largely for the purpose of collecting taxpayer-funded fees for providing services to the Paterson Animal Control Division. I am writing a letter to the Paterson City Council regarding this business and its relationship with the city.
One of the things that I find appalling about some of those who earn their living treating animals, is when they demonstrate a complete disregard and lack of compassion, and willingness to help a sick dying animal with no sponsor or advocate, that is suffering dearly.
If this vet was hit by a car and severely injured, and was just ignored and left to die on the street, we would never know if that experience might have changed his outlook and attitude about humanitarian acts.
Because I work in Clifton and rescued the animal from that town, I contacted the Clifton Animal Shelter, who upon being told the circumstances, told me to bring the sick animal there immediately, which I did, and which they promptly put out of its misery, in a respectful and humane way. There was no charge for the service, but I made a donation to their animal rescue and adoption group.
I urge all animal lovers, advocates and pet owners to take into consideration how a vet treats cases such as this, and to choose those who, in similar circumstances, will do the right thing, as opposed to business as usual.
