So far this has been the best hotel i've visited though this is only my second. It is nice and clean. the rooms are small and the neighborhood is a little noisy but other than that i enjoyed my stay and will book again in the future

Clean rooms, adequate facilities, good breakfast, the front desk associates were nice, we had a great view of Manhattan from our room. Walk to subway minimal, 15- 20 minutes to lower Manhattan. Problem: without a doubt I left a sentimental piece of jewelry in our room after checkout on a Sunday, I called Tuesday evening and was told to call back in the morning to speak with the manager. when I called back I was told the manager wasn't there but the front desk associate put me on hold and "checked into it" he told me no one had stayed in our room since we left and that nothing was in the room. My conclusion: one of the associates that had been in room 406 has poor moral judgment and a lack of integrity. Do not claim what is not yours to claim.

For a budget hotel, if you do the basics well you get 3 stars, if you do the basics with good customer service I'll give you 4 stars. This hotel did most of the basics to satisfaction. However there were a few negative things that lead me to giving it only two stars.

We checked in and our room # was C07. The C stands for "cellar" because our room was, in fact, on the cellar level of the hotel; this was the source of our issues.

First issue - we enter our room for the first time and the window was open. The window opens wide enough for a person to easily fit thru, the window was at ground level. The issue is that the window, when closed, would not lock. Personally, I'm not really comfortable staying in a hotel where someone can climb in your window. My wife was very uncomfortable with this.

Right away I went back out and told them the window would not lock. One of the owners came to the room, gave it his best shot at locking the window, he could not get it to lock. We asked for a different room, and he initially stated there were no other rooms available. Upon pressing him he said he had another room we could move to....the room right next door to the one we were already in - how convenient considering just moments before that there were no rooms.

He took me in the other room only to find that the window in that room (again, ground level) would not lock either. He claimed that was the only other room available. At that point he told us that in the morning he might have another room free, and asked if he should put a note in to switch us, to which I said yes. After about 20 minutes of trying to brace our window, and continued efforts to lock it, I was actually able to get the lock to go in place. However, they never said a word to us the next morning about switching us, as they had promised to do. I shouldn't have to wrestle with a window for 25 minutes to be secure, and I shouldn't have to harass the staff to get a room where I feel safe.

On a side note regarding the window/room switch....the room that he had offered to switch us into smelled like cologne and cigarettes when he took me into it....and then later that night I clearly heard someone watching tv in that same room. I believe he offered us his "hang out room" to sleep in. Not cool.

Second issue - Because it was cellar level the hallway was done in tile and not carpet. The issue with that is the hotel staff decided they needed to be out in the tile hallway every night at around 11PM pushing around cleaning carts and getting in and out of the storage areas. Tile halls echo like crazy. So our room was not quiet at all. If you're going to put people on the cellar level, do the hallway in carpet, or do your work in that hallway at a reasonable hour. Most of the positive reviews on here say it was quiet, but we couldn't say the same due to being on cellar level.

So, in summary, this could have been a three or four star rating, but being on the cellar floor, and the way the staff handled our window situation leads me to only being able to give it a two star. I don't expect the world for a budget hotel, but when it's a matter of my family feeling safe, don't jerk me around and provide better customer service.

We stayed at "Sleep Inn" the 28 October 2014. Our room was clean, quiet and comfortable, the breakfast was plentiful and tasty, and the staff were exceptionally pleasant, efficient and accomodating. The subway to Manhattan is a 7 minute walk away. The district is not elegant but very safe- my husband and I (both in our 80s) walked home from the subway station at midnight with complete confidence. A good option especially if you are taking or departing a cruise ship from the nearby port.
