Note: this review is more for the Psych Ward of Saint Joseph's.
The nurses were okay, but a lot of the psych technicians in the ward abused the patients (i.e. one patient said a psych technician had twisted her arm; another, who had a severe mental problems would scream at the top of her lungs and declare that she wanted to kill her self, the staff eventually would say "just do it"). There is also no therapy here, they claim to have therapy but really all a patient does is sit in a group and color or play board games. It is also very hard to transfer to another hospital (which is what I wanted to do), and it is only after you remind your social worker day after day that they may consider transferring you. In this psych ward you have a treatment team of your nurse, doctor/psychiatrist, and social worker. The patient is required to take their medications, attend "group" meetings (see above description) in order to receive a good bill of health to leave earlier/on time. Despite this, I have seen patients who have followed these requirements, and remained much longer than there were told. Staff does not care about their patients nor are prepared to handle very severe cases. It is very difficult to sometimes handle severe cases, but there needs to be a change in the training they give to the staff here. In short, the psych ward is a terrible place where the staff do not care about you, and there is no actual psychological therapy here, neither individual or group therapy. Only the coloring therapy I mentioned before.
Note: this next review concerns solely the emergency room
I have been admitted to the ER twice. I was placed in the psych part of the ER, in a 3-roomed corridor. The room that I was placed in had a bloody tissue on the floor, dried reddish brown stains on the wall that I assumed to be blood. There were also cracks and missing pieces in the floor. The staff was kind to me
me, but the wait time there is very very long unfortunately, so if you are in a severe crisis that needs immediate medical attention, I would advise going to White Plains Hospital or Montefiore.
