Reviews to Ruben's Empanadas
Being of Venezuelan heritage and having home made empandas for my entire life as well as having spent quite some time down in both Argentina and Venezuela, where empanadas are considered a stable cuisine; I am very qualified to tell you that when it comes to his name sake dish, this man has no idea what he is doing. His seasonings are ok, the pastry crust that is supposed to be flaky and somewhat crisp tends to come out chewy and doughy as though it were not cooked thoroughly. All in all, I have had 3 empanadas from this place and every single one was a disappointment. Major Yikes to those who hire him for catering and get gouged for crappy food. My heart goes out to those people .

The empanadas are solid. Not spectacular, but good enough.

We went there a Sunday (bonus point for being opened) while touring the Financial district. I'm no Empanadas expert but the two I took (Argentine Sausage & Spicy chicken) were REALLY good. Especially the latter. The owner is nice and can advise you if you have no idea what to pick.

The Guava Empanada is a joke. Not worth the money. Go to Sophie's a few doors down for an awesome guava and cheese empanada.

We've been to Argentina twice, and while these *look* like the authentic baked empanadas we crave, I'm sorry to say they missed the mark. Yes, they were big, but the crust/dough was very tasteless. The beef was pretty enjoyable, but we found the filling in the spicy chicken and the ham and cheese options to leave us disappointed. But, again, the real issue is that the crust was so lackluster - it really should be improved.
