I want to preface my review with the fact that I moved last May from NYC to Hoboken and found the move easy and seamless with another set of movers who I found through Unpakt. I was appalled at the difference between my last experience and RPM Movers.
I was feeling wary even before they arrived since at 8:30am, they had failed to even call to tell me they were on the way. Finally they arrived at 8:40am (I know they were scheduled to arrive between 8 and 10 but I really was expecting them to show up promptly at 8 ready to work) and immediately started by showing a list of packing prices they wanted to charge to crate items like the beds, TVs and mirrors. I purposely did not opt to crate the beds, etc. as I had moved less than a year prior and was completely satisfied with the way they utilized the moving blankets and plastic wrap, etc on the bed, box frame and my (old 32" tube) TV. Since the foreman came in like a used car salesmen, trying to sell additional services - it made us immediately uncomfortable that he was trying to take advantage of 2 girls. Once I declined, he kept mentioning how things may break. Once he told us that he can't control a TV breaking in the back of the truck, we told him to leave the 42" living room flat screen TV and that we would take it ourselves since we did not want our new 42" TV breaking. This caused his tune to chang and he assured us nothing would break, that he was professional and knew what he was doing and therefore shouldn't worry about our items. Although the TV's and mirrors (his biggest concerns) made it through the move, we have many broken items:
Our bathroom rack/shelving is missing a support beam that they took off for no reason and forgot to give back the screws to reattach it (my roommate saw him pocket them), The leather couches are completely scratched and have rips in the corners which is particularly upsetting because they were new and haven't even be sat in more than a handful of times, they completely scratched the top and front of my dresser and broke the middle leg which is now cracked down the center and tilted, my roommates desk is now missing the center support beam so it's now sagging in the middle, they also lost our stepladder and when I called to find out if they had it, I had to leave a vm because no one picked up, and when they called back, they said it was probably still at our old apartment and they didn't have it in any of the trucks..
Also, this has to be noted, when we mentioned the broken, scratched, ruined furniture, the foreman's response was: "That's what happens when you move... stuff breaks".
On top of the damages, the movers took 7.5 hours to complete the job of moving a small 2 BR apartment 1 mile away. They were completely unprofessional and were arguing the entire time. I heard the foreman scolding one of his workers multiple times to "keep the personal life at home next time" and "if you take one more break, I'm going to fire you". The foreman seemed to be the only person working. Also, because the foreman brought such lousy help, my roommates parents started bringing items into the apartment from the moving truck because the movers were taking so long to complete the task.
I am greatly upset that we are going to be charged an additional $129 due to the 2 couches that could not fit in the elevator and therefore had to be carried up 4 flights of stairs. They tried to tell us it was 8 flights... impossible considering we are on the top floor, which is the 5th floor. Considering the damage done to the couches I am extremely upset at having to pay an additional $130 and think it is unjustified.
Overall, this was a very upsetting, very disappointing experience.
