Some of the worst service and food we've ever experienced.
After waiting for a long time to be served, we tried to appeal to the hostess, who actually said to us, and here's the piece de résistence: "You must be from Peoria, if you don't know what Roma is like on Saturdays!" In other words: "How dare you come to Roma's to have dinner on a Saturday!"
When we were finally served, the server literally threw the plates on the table. No one ever came back to find out if everything was OK, something that is customary in every restaurant. Trying to get the attention of the bus boy was literally impossible. He would actually look at us and walk away.
The water tasted like old coffee grounds, and the overcooked fish was served on a bed of over-boiled spinach, floating on stale butter. Even the bread (brought to the table without bread plates) was not good.
Don't you hate having to leave a tip for bad service and lousy food? We did leave a tip, though.
As far as we're concerned it's "Arrivederci Roma!" for us. First and last time.

The best non-coal oven pizza in metropolitan NYC, even better than many city establishments.

Wow, the Roma restaurant is still very good. My family (former Mount Vernonites) ate frequently at this restaurant in the 1950's when it looked like an old dark bar with the back room pizzeria attached. In those days the antipasto was better than what they offer now. The pizza is not like so many other places where it's just dripping oil and cheese right off the slice. Interesting to read that it is still run by third generation of the original ownership. Bon Apetit !!

This is by far the best pizza anywhere in the NYC area. The crust is thin and crunchy, not too much cheese or sauce, and seasoned just perfectly. The pizza's are best if eaten there on those hot metal platters! Be careful of Fridays as they are often the busiest day there and getting a table or pie can take some time. Closed Mondays.
