I attended P.S. 11 from 1946 to 1952 (Kindergarten through 6th. grade) when we moved to Washington Heights where I completed elementary school at P.S. 187. During my attendance at P.S. 11, Mr. Olchin was the Principal. My 1st., 2nd. and 3rd. grade teachers were Mrs. Hanks, Mrs. Dormio and Ms. Velger. Mrs. Pierce, my 6th.grade teacher, who told us that she was the great granddaughter of President Franklin Pierce, was one of the best teachers I've ever had. For Geography she had us bring in one page reports on different countries. This was a voluntary project and we got the information from encyclopedias. She placed a chart on the wall with each child's name and "pockets" for each country. Each time you submitted a report, she would place a "visa" in that country's pocket next to the student's name. Whoever had the most visas at the end of the term received a prize. I can't tell you how creative, original and exciting she made learning and she genuinely looked and dressed like a pioneer lady.
I lived 3 or 4 blocks from the school and went home for lunch everyday. Within the past 10-15 years I learned that my cousin's significant other attended the school at the same time I was there but we never knew or met each other despite the fact that we knew the same teachers and Principal.
