It's unfortunate the first impression of the practice you get is of the horribly rude person who answers the phone. I like my doctor there but it's painful having to call the office for anything because the woman who answers the phone is incompetent & awful to deal with.

Delivered with them in 2012. During my labor my daughter's heart rate dropped dangerously, so much so that all the OB docs rushed in and wanted to do a c-section. My midwife was no-nonsense (all of them are) and said what we needed to do. Thankfully I avoided a c-section. They are not touchy feely, and the receptionist is can be grouchy, but manning a reception is thankless work. They have hearts of gold. Out of the 520 plus births they attended in 2012, only 34 were c-sections. Those are odds I want!

I had a baby with PS Midwives in November 2014. The office on 9th did have long wait times, but I was given very personal, individual attention at each and every appointment. I would rather wait a little longer for my appointment to allow other moms to receive individualized care, than be on time and get the sterile, callous treatment I got at my previous OBGYN. The front desk staff is old school Brooklyn. Straight to the point, no nonsense, but a very loving woman! She is very overwhelmed as you can see while waiting in the waiting room.
All the midwives were very open to my wants for my birth and pregnancy experience and they explained all tests as options (along with the pros and cons) rather than obligations. They made the experience feel like a positive life event rather than a pathological medical intervention.
They were exactly what I wanted in a midwife practice; open, flexible, available, caring and simple.

Money making Business that does not care about well being of patients.
First they told us which Obama insurance they take (Fidelis). We signed up for that insurance, and they then told us that it was a mistake and they don't take it. We were stuck because you can't change insurance until end of year.
We then called NY State of health and they said that due to pregnancy we could now go on medicaid with new plan (We confirmed that the midwives accept United Healthcare). However this took a few months (all the paperwork income verification etc.). Finally we called back parkslope midwives and they refused to see us because we by now we are already 51/2 months into pregnancy without seeing a doctor.
Now with less than 4 months left to the due date, we need to "find" a doctor that will accept this insurance!

Many people have bad experiences because they have very high expectations that are not possibly able to be kept. The secretary is a sweetheart but has a lot of obligations and the phone rings off the hook most of the day. Scheduling is tight because there are so many patients needing to get in to be seen. Like all doctors offices, it is not always possible to predict how long an appointment will take and sometimes the appointment times have wait periods. In my experience, the midwives (all of them) were professional, helpful and ready to support me in my birth plan. It is for these reasons a woman should choose a midwife who delivers at a hospital. If you want more one-on-one care then consider a midwife that delivers at home or in a private institution. This is my second baby I've gone to the Park Slope Midwives to deliver and I love them. My first child I had an OBGYN traditional practice and I feel much better cared for with the midwives.
