Worst experience of my life! I really should have been more careful but I was in a rush as it was a last-minute move.
SOMEHOW, it took two guys plus a driver 4 and a half hours to move a one-bedroom apartment's worth of stuff ( two dressers, a bed, drawing table, nightstand, couch, and armchair plus boxes) across the street!
They parked the truck on the other block, so I understand it took them some time to get the things to the truck; however, I moved with the same stuff plus more furniture with two guys and a truck into the place and it did not even take half that time. Unfortunately, I could not find help this time and had no choice but to hire movers.
They moved my things into a storage unit across the street and when I went in it, there were boxes that looked as if they had been tossed in next to the couches (on their sides, etc). Also, there was a scratch on a piece of furniture. Luckily I was planning on replacing it soon anyway. The guys were very nice but I had a bad feeling the whole time. I have moved many times in similar circumstances but never have paid $560 something to get my stuff into a storage unit. I am at fault for not asking about the details of the charges and such. They charge an hour's time for driving each way.
If I am going to pay $95/hr, I expect them to do it a heck of a lot faster. They would be gone for extended periods when at the truck. I should have gone to check on them but I was busy and frantic. I was hesitant to complain because the gentlemen were so kind and polite, and perhaps they are not the men who set the fees. Nevertheless, I feel like I was robbed. It is sickening to pay that much and then find some (to be fair- only two or three) items casually tossed into the storage unit. It was a last minute move, and they even showed up early, so I expected it to be expensive- but nothing like this.
For comparison, when moving within Astoria a few years ago, I called two men and a truck the night before a move and they showed up the next day, moved about twice as much stuff in less than half the time and only charged $300 (plus an optional tip which I was happy to provide). They were two very thin asian men that were about half the size of the movers from Official Moving, yet so much faster.
Overall I appreciate the pleasantness of the movers and their patience with my constant fretting and chaos, but I was so shocked upon paying that I still feel sick when thinking about it. I definitely learned my lesson but feel as if I was very much taken advantage of. If you must use this company- BE VERY CLEAR about your quote and what your final cost will be!!
