NYS Energy Audits

NYS Energy Audits are true professionals. They are efficient, thorough,and even cleaned up when they were done. All the workers were a pleasure to deal with.

To give a little background, I have been living in a 90 year old 2-story w/ basement wood frame house with a brick/stucco facade for almost 20 years. These types of home are ubiquitous in Queens, NY and my comfort level during the winter and summer months is quite problematic. During the winter of 2014-2015 the temperature in my room would dip to 62 degrees Fahrenheit and my toes would ice over, even with 2 pairs of socks on. The windows in my room formed mold and icicles on the inside! In the summer time the climate situation was not much better as the AC would need to be on at least 12 hours a day. The top floors are even worse since the roof takes the full blast of the sun's rays and transmits the heat to the top floor rooms so the cooling costs there would be even higher.

Needless to say something had to be done and we were referred to NYS Energy Audits by a friend. The biggest surprise was that a 100% percent discount was applied due to our financial qualifications so we made no hesitation to get the audit and work done. The auditing process went very smoothly and was done by an inspector and 2 other workers. Almost everything in the house was thoroughly checked and as expected the house was in pretty bad shape. In some of the rooms there was enough draft to set up a wind farm and there were large pockets of air between the inner and outer walls. At the end of the audit I have received maybe a few dozen cfl bulb replacements, new shower heads and even new freezers! The boiler room and heating system was also checked and it was found that my heater gas burner was defective and they replaced it, which is kind of annoying because I just weathered an icy winter with a half-functioning heating system.

Finally, a month later the insulation work was done and in about five hours the entire house was air and heat sealed. All leaky windows were caulked and the thermostat changed to a digital one. The open air pockets (accessed by a 4 inch diameter hole in ceiling) in the walls were filled with a treated cellulose material which should give better performance than fiberglass but it was a little messy. After the work, everything was cleaned up and the holes sealed and now a final inspection is scheduled soon. All the work was very professional, nothing was damaged, the workers were cool and I am completely satisfied with the job.
