The NYSW is one of the oldest railroad companies still using most of its original name (since 1881). The company once operated west of Sparta Junction until the L&NE (Lehigh and New England) folded in 1961, which made the Susie-Q pull up all of its track on that portion. That portion is now the Paulinskill Valley Trail. The NYSW also once had a different alignment north of Sparta Junction that ran across Ogdensburg and thru Sussex Boro, which it no longer does. Portions of the original alignment are now rail-trail. The NYSW now uses the Lehigh and Hudson River (LHR) tracks north of Sparta Junction into Orange County NY, then heads westward to the Susie-Q Valley of NY.
