Used to be a great gym when I worked here ~2010. I was amazed at what could happen to a place that once was a beautiful facility. Now it's simply what you would expect from a $20/month gym. Definitely taints the NYSC name.
STATE OF GYM:
When I visited last year to sign up, I was met by an inexperienced and unprofessional salesman that knew very little about gyms. I toured the gym and was very upset about how crowded it was and the unclean appearance. There were weights all over the floors, people were not wiping machines after they used them, and the overall atmosphere was loud, smelly, and warmer and more humid than I prefer. The manager I used to work under had been very adamant about keeping the gym clean and at 65 degrees max.
SALESMAN:
When asked by the salesman, I was honest about my disappointment with the new state of the gym, but he could not seem to understand that I did not want to sign up. He continued to try to get my information and in the end seemed desperate for a sale. I left after I made it 100% clear that I did not want to be contacted by the gym after the visit.
CONCLUSION:
I went in expecting the clean, professional, cool and dry gym it once was, having decided to be okay with paying the ~$80/month I used to pay for NYSC when I lived in Manhattan, and came out utterly disappointed and truly sad about my previous place of employment.

NYSC is incredibly shady. If you read the reviews on Yelp you will find many, many people who canceled their memberships only to start getting nasty-grams from debt collectors months of ever years later claiming their membership was never canceled and that they now owe hundreds of dollars. Stay away from NYSC!!!!

I emailed customer service about a text that I received confirming my personal trainer appointment. I didn't have an appointment. I never got an answer back. It seems that the gym just sets up random appointments to charge more.

Place is cool, even chill. The members are laid-back and you feel OK here. Plenty of weights, plenty of machines. The staff is accommodating if you don't expect a red carpet rolled out every time you come in to spin for a few minutes--- I've never had an issue and I am on a first-name basis with a lot of the people there. The weights could be ordered a little bit better, but in my opinion that falls on the members. You can't expect people to slave behind you if you leave plates on the bar, if you throw plates all over the place. Clean up after yourself and it's a great experience for everyone. Would recommend.

After searching through many gyms I knew exactly what I was looking for and I went into the Clifton location to see if they offered it. When i asked about their cancellation fee I was lied to about it and was told there was not one for a student account. Now that i am trying to cancel my membership (one that I've made clear i plan to start back up when the school year is over), the company refuses to waive the $30 cancellation fee claiming that if they did that it would "break the bank". The general manager was actually yelling at me on the phone telling me how it wasn't her problem and how much that $30 mattered to the company. She even stated how often this happens and how her employees lying isn't something she was responsible for. This company doesn't care about customer service at all and I have spoken to nothing but rude representatives of the company who refuse to honor what I was told by their employee and by her boss. If this is how they behave about $30 I am more then hesitant to be a return customer to a company who doesn't stand behind what they promise.
