Never too busy to workout at anytime, could be cleaned up and weights put back to proper areas at night after close cause its a little messy and unorganized. Reguardless, this place is a breath of fresh air compared too when I was at retro fitness...ugh...packed in like sardines over there.

I've been going to this gym for about a year now and it is well equipped and has a good space for free weights. Plus Alex and his staff are very knowledgable, courteous and professional.

Wow! I was checking out other NYSC location reviews bc I just upgraded back to a passport memberships and could use all locations again. I checked the review of my home gym to use as comparison and was shocked at how negative the reviews were.
I love this gym. I have been a NYSC member for nine years, used multiple locations, and this is my favorite. I have never seen it dirty. The staff is friendly. I have had issues with billing, as is common with most membership gyms, and management has always been kind enough to sit down, explain, and remedy the situation. Yes, weights are not always racked properly, however, I don't know what Shangri-la gym does have their weights constantly racked throughout the day. If you find one in NYC for $20-60/month, please let me know. I would not have even upgraded back to the passport, but because of schedule changes, I am not in Astoria as often and still want to work out.

DON'T USE THIS GYM! IT'S ROBBERY!!! I just called to cancel my membership at this overpriced gym and was told that I have to pay another 30 days in order to cancel the membership. They said that if I call member services, they would be able to do something so I call and SHE COULDN'T DO ANYTHING FOR ME- NOT EVEN AS A COURTESY! With boutique gyms and other affordable gyms on the rise, New York Sports Club needs to start valuing loyalty (I've been a member since 2010) and do smart business.

This is a great place if you are male, under 40 and love building muscles and preening. The overall space is dominated by weight lifting and extreme fitness apparatus, which attracts mostly younger men. A boom box often overwhelms the piped in music as well as your own personal music. Cell phone use is rampant and "house rules" are never enforced. Personal trainers are mostly young men who are up on the latest trends but not well-versed in meeting the individual needs of women, people over 50 and non body builders.
The space is large and the equipment varied and in pretty good condition. It is the atmosphere that has become oppressive in recent years. Perhaps that is a sign of the times.
