New York Sports Club

You sign up expecting certain benefits and they keep changing it/reducing the benefits. New guest policy change is going to cause quite a bunch of people I know to switch to LA fitness right across the highway which has a much better MODERN facility.

Real metal weights & lots of pilates classes. This gym is for serious fitness

Ignore the reviews that give this place one star. They're apparently from people who had trouble with NYSC as a corporate entity and are badmouthing individual clubs for revenge. Their complains aren't even about this club.

Concerning the Staten Island NYSC, I've been a NYSC member for many years and usually go to the gym in Manhattan, where I work. But I live in Staten Island and occasionally drive to this one when I want to work out on the weekend and it's not convenient to go to Manhattan. So this is a review for weekends ONLY.

This is the only Staten Island club and it's a bit strange for someone used to Manhattan clubs. There's the usual assortment of cardio equipment, and a vast free-weight area (larger than some whole clubs in Manhattan), with lots of guys using it. They don't have express-line weight machines here and the guys working out on the weekends are into serious poundage. But everyone, members and staff, seems friendly enough, and nobody laughs at me when I put on my puny little weights. The club is open to 7 on the weekend (and 11 during the week, later than almost all the Manhattan clubs). This club also has room for a handball court and a basketball court, again unlike Manhattan clubs.

The men's locker room is also huge compared to Manhattan, and there's a decent steam room (and a sauna that's never hot). There are only 6 showers for this huge locker room, but I've never had to wait for a shower and I've never seen more than two or three guys in there, even near closing. So I guess most Staten Island men prefer to shower at home, at least on the weekend.

So in general this is a convenient club for my occasional use. I don't know anything about the classes, trainers, etc., who are there.

Staff are polite and helpful. Location is clean and staff are usually on top of making sure weights get racked even with all the sloppy lifters in the place that lift big but aren't grown enough to put their plates and bells aways.

Machines are pretty much functional with the exception of the occasional one that will break down but even then, they're serviced pretty quickly when it does break down.

Always soap in the showers. Sauna always works. Towels always abundant. Classes are usually packed. Gym-goers are friendly and will spot you or pick up a game of ball with you.

This staff if by far the worst of any NYSC I've been a member of. I had to make many calls to NYSC corporate or TSI (Town Sports International), the body that manages the Sports Club brands everywhere. After speaking with corporate and finishing up with dealing with the GM of the NYSC of Staten Island, I thought everything was taken care of because I got back the money that had been wrongfully charged to my account. Unfortunately, that was not the case; a little over 6 months later I received a letter from their collection agency, Integrity Solution Services Inc., stating that I owed TSI money. The same money they had credited back to me for their mess up! Good thing I keep records and I had all the proof of this. I dealt with TSI once again and was assured the matter should be resolved. Never going back there again!
