Stayed for 6 nights and we loved it. It's a great place to stay and the staff was great and helpful. Make sure you get a metro pass for a week if your staying a few days. It will pay itself off if you end up taking the subway and bus for transportation. We had a German lady help us on the first day we got there and she was real sweet and helpful. Rooms are EXCELLENT. Modern and comfortable. Good room service and just an easy place to lodge for the night if your visiting NY and want to get out of the city for the night. To get to Manhattan take the S51 to the Staten island ferry, then the ferry will take you to Manhattan for free. And it's a 24/7 transportation. No complains we leave in a day. Will definetly be coming back here if we ever visit.

We spent four nights and it was great. The breakfast was not that good, but plenty of coffee. They claim that it's within walking distance of the Coast Guard exchange. It depends on what you call walking distance. Our only complaint was that there were smokers right outside the main entrance. We brought this to the attention of the staff, but as it turns out, some of them were smokers. We want to go back to New Your City and you just can't find a better deal.

EXCELLANT! The best part of Navy Lodge NY is the staff. EVERY single staff member had a smile and a friendly word at all times. Always helpful and attentive to your needs. In addition, the rooms were very modern and clean, and the interior of the building was well kept. While there is a beach a short walk from the lodge, there are really no other amenities. But, what else do you need? You are in NEW YORK! Enough said! Light breakfast is served in lobby each morning, but I would suggest the Coast Guard Galley around the corner for complete balanced meals and reasonable cost.
Getting around. While we found driving on Staten Island no problem, I would suggest public transportation for the rest of the city. An unlimited 7 day pass was about $30 and can be used for all NYC Metro Buses and trains. Buses stop on Lilly pond Ave. right outside the gate. They are frequent and run at all hours. Take one to The Staten Island ferry, which is free and makes access to Manhattan a quick and easy trip and is a wonderful sightseeing opportunity. OR, ride the S53 Bus across the Verrazano Bridge and connect direct with the subway at 86th street in Brooklyn. From there you can get anywhere in the city.
I look forward to my next trip!

Best kept secret (at least it was for us) for affordable NYC lodging. I called the front desk the day prior to arrival and got a room for 4 nights. Easy to get to the Staten Island ferry (make sure you get there plenty early to get a parking spot or go up the hill to the parking ramp). No commissary here, but there is one (and a PX) across the bridge at Ft Hamilton. MWR office nearby is helpful with tickets and such. Lodging staff is helpful and "NYC-friendly." Breakfast is pretty standard continental, but don't wait too long to get there or it'll all be gone. We'll definitely stay here again if we're back in NYC.
