This place will give you food coma..... I have no idea how u not rate this place 5 stars. You probably don't like good food. The chef and his wife is the friendliest people you will meet. They make u feel like you r home. Very generous and welcoming. We had the tasting menu. We asked the chef to surprise us for desert. Oh man it was a surprise. This place is THE BEST.

Mombar is a cozy, eclectic spot for home-style Egyptian food. The atmosphere reminded me a lot of Cairo's alleyway holes-in-the wall. You literally feel as though you've stepped into the chef's home as he prepares and serves you the food. We went with the chef's special where the chef cooks you whatever he likes - giving you a heads up of whats to come when you place your order.
Started off with the usual mezze of babaganoush (eggplant), fool (fava beans) and hummus (chickpeas) with pita bread. Next, we were served with four courses ranging from fish tajeen with couscous to lamb cheeks in a sauce to liver.
Definitely worth a try if you are an adventurous meat eater.

The owner is a very amicable host who cooks amazingly good home food.
While everything we tried was very delicious, Lamb Tajeen Over Couscous left me speechless--I couldn't believe anything might taste that good! It was definitely worth the long ride I took to get there from Brooklyn.

This is the reason why Astoria exists. You simply can't get eclectic, cozy, mom & pop places like this in the city! Firstly, the exterior and interior of the restaurant are kooky, which adds a very definite charm to the eating experience. Secondly, the food boldly goes to new and exciting places in terms of cuisine offered stateside, and you'd be rewarded for trying out the adventurous fare (lamb cheeks? hell yes). Thirdly, the service was just great. The waiter was attentive, but not overbearing in the slightest. He knew exactly how to explain what separates each dish as well as when we needed more bread. And he let me and my friends really enjoy each others company for several hours. This place certainly takes its time, so I wouldn't recommend it if you're in a rush. But if you want a delicious meal with good company for hours on end, then come here.
