BEWARE!!!! Marlene is running a scam. I brought my clothes to her boutique to be sold, and after leaving 11 items of clothing I was given a receipt that said I had until a certain date by which to pick them up if they were not sold, upon which they would be "dontated" to goodwill. I called last week and was informed 2 jackets had not been sold. I wanted to pick them up. She told me she couldn't find them. Then she called me back and told me she had given them away to goodwill, 1 1/2 months earlier than the receipt stated I had to pick them up if unsold!
I arrived at the store with my receipt stating I had until November to pick up the two jackets. Marlene casually tells me that in fact she had sold one, (completely contrary to what was told to me days earlier) and paid me already (untrue), and the other jacket had been "donated" to goodwill. I was given a completely different story than what she had told me on the phone!
I showed her the receipt which she wrote herself, clearly stating I had another 1 1/2 MONTHS to pick up the jackets if they were not sold. She proceeds to tell me she made a mistake. I explained to her again that she should not have given anything away. She then begins to talk down to me stating "Listen to me." "You are not hearing what I am saying!" I heard everything she said, all the varying versions, and the way she was handling it was causing me to be very suspicious, was highly unprofressional, offensive and quite frankly criminal.
In fact if you run a business and give a person two months to pick up clothing they left with you to sell, and you suddenly give them away, breaking the contract with the client, then the least you can do is acknowledge that mistake and compenstate the person whose clothes you didn't sell and just gave away. This all assumes you believe this was all on the up and up, which I do not.
She then told me with a dismissive tone, "The jackets were given to people who need them." So now she's basically acknowledging that she gave my jackets away because she determined that 1) the contract she wrote, with a specific date by which I could pick up the unsold item was meaningless 2) she could have sold the jacket without telling me, or just have given it to her friends whom she has deemed "needy" as if paying me when I have bills to pay is not even relelvant to her. 3) she then talked down to me, insulting me, acting as if she had done nothing wrong, offering no compensation or apology.
Take your clothes to Marelnes if you want her to give your clothes away to her friends and then tell you that everyone makes mistakes.
Totally unprofessional, totaly offensive, and criminal. There are plenty of consignment shops in New Jersey that will respect the clients and deal with them in an honest manner. Marelenes IS NOT one of them.
AVOID MARLENES AT ALL COSTS.
