We have always done our own taxes but decided to hire a professional for our 2010 taxes since we had sold a house in one state and bought another in a different one. We figured we could use the help of a professional and maximize and advantages we can get.
We had an initial consultation with Lucia in December 2009 and decided to go back the following year to get our 2010 taxes done by her. She certainly speaks with confidence and gives the impression that she is knowledgeable and a professional. Since our 2010 taxes were filed with no apparent problems, we decided to go back to her for our 2011 taxes. The troubles started soon afterwards.
The troubles started around June 2012. We got a letter from the IRS that our taxes were mis-filed and we not only owed them a substantial amount of money but also interest and penalties. We contacted Lucia immediately whose attitude was rather nonchalant. She acted like it was no big deal and she couldn't really see us for at least a couple of weeks. We were not happy with this approach. When we finally met with her she turned the tables on us and claimed we made her make those mistakes. According to her it was all our fault but we should fight the IRS in any case. Needless to say we were shocked and completely speechless that a professional would claim her customer forced her to make a mistake.
When we came back home and started reviewing the tax forms with a fine tooth comb and reading the IRS guidelines, we realized that the IRS was right. We also found additional mistakes that she had made on our forms. The shocking thing is that it took us less than an hour to figure out what the correct filing should have been and we are not tax or financial experts. Clearly she had not done her homework or worse incapable of understanding the tax code.
We settled the issues with IRS and started to pro-actively look at our 2011 taxes filed by her to determine if she had made similar mistakes. And yes, once again the tax forms were riddled with mistakes. We contacted the IRS and had our 2011 taxes corrected as well.
How can a professional make such major mistakes on issues that are not so complicated? And if mistakes are made, shouldn't a true professional own up to the mistakes and offer to make amends? Sadly that's not the case with Lucia. She tried to turn the table back on us and refused to accept responsibility.
Our advise is that if you do decide to use her, please review every entry very very carefully and beware that if mistakes are made, she will not own up to it or support you.
