After several months of training, my overall experience at the Krav Maga Institute (KMI) has been great. KMI has several accessible locations, highly competent instructors, and a welcoming community of students. I have just signed up for an annual membership following a 10-class trial with a Groupon, and I would strongly recommend KMI to all without any hesitation.

I leave every class with a huge smile on my face. I've been training a couple of times a week for about 6-7 months and these classes are not just a great workout but they are an awesome and practical way to stay safe in this crazy world. None of the spiritual stuff that I've come across in other martial arts, just super practical and simple moves that anyone can do - there is no wrong answer type stuff. Men and women of all ages can do this and it's great to stay in shape while learning how to protect yourself and people around you. Highly recommend this!

I would like to preface this review on what Krav Maga at the Krav Maga Institute NYC is not:

This is not a place where you will feel bullied, overwhelmed, or unsafe during the classes.

This is not a place where you will train for tournament style fighting.

This is not a place where you will not feel welcomed based of your age, background, skill level, height, weight, race, or any other identifiable trait.

What the KMI NYC represents and delivers is an inclusive and alternative approach to getting in shape, feeling good about yourself, and most importantly teaching you skills and techniques that may one day save your life.

KMI NYC offers world class instruction, dedication, and accreditation in Krav Maga which is a self-defense and combat system. If you have ever felt unsafe in a subway car, dark city street, crowded bar, or simply just walking in broad daylight through Central Park, KMI NYC will teach you to channel that fear and anxiety into a tested and tried self defense methodology that is taught around the world including our own police and military.

I joined the KMI MYC in Jan 2014 and went 3 days a week for 8 months until I had to relocate for work. This was arguably the best money I had ever spent on physical fitness and will be rejoining once I return. As a former collegiate athlete, I wanted something different than the routine of normal working out and was not that interested in Crossfit. I needed something more, something tangible, something applicable. Simply put, this was it.

My recommendation: try it out. Attend an intro class, see what it's about, especially if you are new to this brand of training. If you are familiar with Krav Maga and want to get started or further your development, this is the school. I'll save you the time; I did my research, this is the place.

My only caution is this: You might get addicted and make some friends along the way.

All the best and hope to see you there.

I've studied and tried a bunch of different forms of martial arts throughout my life. Hands down Krav Maga with KMI has been the best.

The training is the most effective, efficient, and challenging I've ever experienced. But that isn't what makes these guys the best: The instructors are amazing. The instructors are enthusiastic, motivating, and really know their stuff.

I tried this school after training at another Krav school for a couple of months. I actually left the induction class with KMI thinking it was the best class I've ever taken. They make everything fun and interesting, it's not just repetitive boot camp drills. The training incorporates real-life scenarios and practical techniques. Unlike other martial arts and self-defense systems, there isn't strict hierarchy; the older students are open to help from anyone else, the new students are encouraged to take on advanced techniques from the start. The instructors are open to questions and will always stop to break things down for you if you don't understand.

I couldn't recommended it enough

Probably the BEST Krav Maga school in NYC, if not the country. The things that I've learned here in just two years have been invaluable, and all of the instructors have brought their unique styles and perspectives to really make this unique. Instructors will contour their lessons to fit each student's needs/skills, while maintaining a strong focus and direction. Beyond learning the skill of Krav Maga, KMI also teaches awareness, safety in training, and physical conditioning.

As someone who has studied several other martial arts, I've stuck with Krav the longest because of the immediate return and practicality of it. Krav is not just a martial art; it is self-defense at the highest level but preaches it as a last resort. Like any trained fighter will tell you, nobody studies martial arts/self defense as a means to attack but to prevent and disable.

I would definitely recommend checking the school out (there are numerous locations throughout the city and more opening up in other boroughs soon) with different times and levels to fit in with your schedule. Try a class or two - tell them Tony sent you!
