This school offers a wide range of classes in each of the three academies. The teachers know what they're doing and strive to make their students succeed throughout the school year. The students are really intelligent (don't underestimate them), which also leads to a competitive aura in the air, but they all cooperate. Lunch is pretty bad to be honest, but our school is very clean. In fact, we have a recycling club after school! Overall, I think this school is perfect if you are willing to learn as much as you possibly can with staff and other pupils. Fun ensures in each academy. :)

I am currently a 7th grader and I LOVE this school. I don't understand why people write negative reviews about it. All the teachers are awesome, and there is never a lot of homework (at least for me). I am in the Scientific Research academy and I really like it. People say Arts and Humanities is the best and that the rest of the academies are boring but that is wrong. In my opinion, Scientific is awesome and really fun as well. The education is very good and all the students are smart and nice. But the best part is that there is... NO HOMEWORK ON BREAKS =P. Over all, I am really satisfied with this school and I recommend it to EVERYONE.

This school has a very strong academic structure and an unique teaching style. Students at this school have certain senses of community. The environment of the school is somewhat racially slurred. On the downside, I.S. 187 has a very confusing admissions process that cause applicants and their families to stress and worry about the entrance to this G&T school (gifted and talented). The sanitation of the school is also a little messy and dirty.
Academics: 5/5 stars.
This school uses a strong variety of teaching techniques to provide the best education for their students. Modern technology is also implemented in subjects like English and Science. This school is also research-based; students are taught to discover new information to connect to their current subjects. I.S. 187 is also very strict about the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS), which pushes students out of the boundaries. Overall, very excellent education.
Community: 3/5 stars
Interaction between School-Parent-Student: 4/5 stars.
Students at this school are generally very competitive and fight over academics (grades, tests, quizzes, etc.), high school acceptances, and more. Some immaturity here and there. However, classmates support each other and help out when needed.
The school keeps parents updated on latest events, evacuations, and notices. Their weekly messages are effective but sometimes annoying. There are three parent-teacher conferences at this school, including one "Parent Night," where parents learn about each teacher's style of teaching, the curriculum, and value of the courses. Parents learn to bounce their children's standings in school, forming a strong relationship between the school, the parent, and the student(s).
Environment (Race, Gender, and IEP): 3/5 stars.
The majority of the school environment are highly gifted and talented Asian students. Both genders are equally distributed. About 3% of the school's population of have an individualized education plan, or IEP. The school should bring people of different diversities to stabilize a certain race from dominating the school. Stereotyping and racial discrimination should also be limited.
Admissions: 3/5 stars.
The school only accepts about 300 District 20 students in Brooklyn who have high academic standards. However, it does get confusing because a number of factors affect the chance of being accepted to this school. This includes attendance, behavior, IEP, and priority. There are also different three academies: the Scientific Research Academy, the Business and Law Academy, and the Arts and Humanities Academy. There are also many misconceptions that "one academy is better than another," etc. The school should clarify the admissions process.
Environment (Physical): 2/5 stars.
Bathrooms are very dirty. There is wet toilet paper all over the floor, excretes improperly aimed, and sometimes very slippery, potentially dangerous, floors. In the staircases, there can sometimes be a very distinctive and revolting smell. There can sometimes be [dead] crawlers around the school.
Class sizes are huge- about 34 students in each class, depending on the academy, there can be more than 34. The gymnasium is also ridiculously small- about the size of a classroom. There is also a workout station. Due to the current construction, there are many hazards and limits to playing in the yard. Fights occur and die easily.
Overall, I.S. 187 is a great school and I definitely recommend students to try to apply for this school.
