A Grief for a Grieve!
I had applied for my renunciation and OCI on Oct 30 2013. On Dec 12th 2013, I was advised to send in my US passport, which I did promptly!
On Dec 27th my father unexpectedly passed away in India, I contacted BLS, and the Indian Embassy. I received an email from the Indian Embassy that my passport was given back to BLS on Dec 20th 2013 (A total of 5 business days – my passport, an important document was kept at BLS!). Later that morning, I was contacted by BLS NY.
I explained the situation, I told them that I lived in NJ state, and to please send my passport via FedEx same day, for which I would pay out of pocket. I called FedEx later that evening to track the package, a package that BLS did not provide me a tracking number for, even after asking the personal involved.
After several attempts Fedex informed, me that my passport was sent via FedEx priority overnight, instead of FedEx same day, because of which my passport went first to Memphis Tennessee, before getting back to NJ. I finally received my passport on December 30th. Due to the delays and lack of sense of urgency from BLS’s end, I- the only child, missed my father’s funeral, and my last opportunity to see him!
I do have the names of personals I dealt with along with email chains, however I wish not to bring it up, as I am sure nothing will be done. It has taken me a good nine months to put this in writing. I just hope no one has to go through this.
BLS was negligent in keeping my passport for 5 business days/ 7 days in their possession. BLS staff also showed total disinterest and an actively disengaged behavior and a lack of compassion, even after knowing the severity of the situation
I had brought this to the attention of Consulate General/ OCI PIO of India on Dec 28th 2013, who asked for a correspondence from BLS on Dec 30th. It’s been appox 9 months and I am still waiting on a corrective action or a correspondence from BLS, as Indian consulate has placed the ball in their court! I am sure they have other priorities, as they are a government system!
This was my experience with BLS- a non compassionate step child of the Indian Consulate!
