Amazing value for money if you don't mind sharing a bathroom. The shared bathrooms were plenty and always spotless. Although the furniture was a bit dated and our window didn't close properly, the location and general comfortable feel of the hotel definitely made up for it. 7min walk to Union Square!

Really lovely old fashioned hotel. Don't be put off by the shared bathrooms - it is rarely a problem. The lift is a work of art. Highly recommended.

For a 2-star hotel we were very pleasantly surprised.
The decor is quite dated and sharing bathrooms probably brought the scores down, but we were very satisfied.
The hotel performs as a much better rated establishment, with a 24 hour concierge and service desk and a very helpful team we were never more than a few minutes away from an extra pillow, ironing board or help working out the radiator.
The shared bathrooms didn't cause any issues. It took 4 days for us to see anyone else on our floor and another day for them to be in the bathroom when we needed it. Though there are 4 bathrooms per floor (of about 10 rooms) so plenty to go round.
My single complaint is that the air-con units were fitted clearly without making the window seal around them secure again so there was always a draught / noise coming through but after touring NYC each day we fell asleep instantly nonetheless.
The location is excellent, about 2 blocks from Union Square Subway there is a direct connection to the major lines going through NYC all times of the day.
Union Square itself was buzzing at all hours of the day as it hosts a very large working area, many shops and a strong night-life.
We found 100s of restaurants, bars and cafes within just a few blocks. (Though of course couldn't try all of them in the week we were there).
Overall I recommend the hotel, as if you are planning on spending enough time in your room for the decor to bother you, you probably aren't enjoying NYC as much as you could :)

The hotel is in a great location, close to union square. The area comes alive at night with local bistros and a wide range of local bars. The hotel has no laundry but there is one close by. The room which me and my brother stayed in did have a view of The Empire State Building. We stayed during the summer, so we had to get a can of bug spray, as we did get bit in the room whilst we slept but after we sprayed, everything was okay. We had to share the bathroom with around 6 more rooms, so its best to be first up... Then you won't have to wait to long and dodge hair in the plug hole. It is basic but its old rustic charm is nice and they do boast about been in some movie and a Madonna video.

I've traveled to Manhattan a few times, and I believe this has been my favorite hotel to date. You'll have the same standard compromises you get with any hotel in the area, like shared restrooms for the floor, but this is reasonable.
I'd recommend staying here.
