Much larger than you think it's going to be. Grant is entombed in NYC & not in Washington DC because NYC would allow Mrs. Grant to be entombed with her husband.
Combine a visit here with all the other Morningside Heights attractions including Cathedral of St John the Divine, Columbia University & Riverside Church. Hamilton Grange is not that far.

Come for the largest mausoleum in America, but stay for the mosaic benches that surround the structure. The benches were installed in 1972 as a community art project designed to bring people together, and to discourage graffiti on the tomb; it achieved both goals. They're bright, filled with detail, and are worth the trip.

If you're coming from downtown, take a bike up the West Side bike path to Riverside Park and head up.

Underated National Monument for a Man who helped win the Civil war and became President of the United States. One of the first civil rights advocates. Largest Mausoleum in the western hemisphere. Easy, free access, tour guides, store and visitors center. Great place.

I havn't got yet expérience on that Memorial but I studied a lot of books about Civil war and Grant in particular. Grant was a great man who had to fight with his hierarchy to reach the role he had at the end of war. before him the grade was granted on the position in the society rather than on competence.
He has been recognized as a great general by its great tactics plans during its fighting in the West, along the Mississippi.
Its role was not made to be president, but by its high quality to be a fair man wishing above everything to restore the unity of the country
