What should have been a 300$ job ended up being 625$ (minus 115$ tow fee). First I broke down and got charged 115$ tow fee which is standard in NJ because police want a dispatching fee which can cost from 30 to as much as 80$. The guy got my car that night and said he was only open half day Saturday. He put the order in for my alternator which I could have got for 160$ but he didn't want me to buy it because obviously he thought I wasn't smart enough to buy the right one. The one he bought cost 225$ which I'm sure he marked up. He never showed me the receipt.
He said my car would be ready Tuesday or Wednesday. In the mean time, I have no car to go back to work because he was taking forever to do the work. I could have had it done at a couple other garages that Monday had he not said he was going to charge me a ridiculous high tow fee plus storage if I didn't let him do the work. So I call Thursday which was almost a week! He said it would be ready Friday and when I asked him if 550$ was still the price he said he would call me back and never did.
I showed up and my car was ready, why would they tell me it wasn't? He would not budge even 25$ on the price, they even charged me for charging my battery that had died! I went almost a week without a car then he even had the nerve to tell me he could have charged me 800$! He said he tightened my timing belt cover which may have taken no more than 10 minutes according to another mechanic was a job. Maybe this guy had bad tools? (Not my problem)
When it was said and done, this guy used his storage fees and other towing costs to keep me from going to the other garage and screwed me royally! I wasn't happy with the service, their business ethic is questionable at best. I would recommend that you have a place in mind where to tow your car if it breaks down and avoid Frank's Garage completely!
