It's heart breaking to write a negative review about a foster organization that was built on giving animals a second chance. However, I am writing this to inform others to be cautious of this rescue. I adopted an adorable 10 month old domestic short hair cat from the PetCo in Hackensack of which this rescue operates out of on the weekends. I already had a 1.5 year old cat at home, who I was seeking a companion for. Unfortunately, the pairing did not work out, and despite my best efforts, my original cat did not take well to the new addition and relentlessly bullied an attacked her. I gave it a month. I contacted FOCAS to inquire about returning the cat; that despite my wanting to keep her, it wouldn't be a fair or happy living situation for either animal. They agreed and I took her back to the PetCo to the volunteers. However, they would not refund me the $100 adoption fee. Saying they do not give refunds. However the contract states no such forfeit of your fee if you surrender the animal. And I did not surrender her because I simply didn't want her. The president, Carol, ignores my inquiries and the helpline volunteers are also not nice. It's not that I care about the money, but it's heart breaking for people who do the right thing. If I knew it wouldn't work out between the cats, I wouldn't have bothered. But you can never tell if they will get along without trying. This discourages people from adopting and I do not recommend this shelter. They are all nice when you adopt, but post, the support is sickening. I know returning an animal is not ideal, but it was the humane thing to do. I will be taking them to small claims, just to prove my point...that if you are going to keep the fee..it should be in the contract!
