The contractor removed the old driveway materials and graded the ground and sub-surface materials to move the rainwater away from the home. After that set up for a few days the contractor returned and paved the driveway and in between times he removed all of the soft stone lining the outside of my porch and replaced it with flag stone.
The removal of the old driveway materials was a little more involved than expected - there were 3 layers of old blacktop in place -grading of the subsurface material went very well. The replacement of the softer sandstone edging around the porch went very well - just had to avoid stepping on it for a few days while it setup so we used the side door. The new driveway went down very well and I loved the look of the new drive but the crew left a lot of oil at the end of the drive on the lawn and on my corner fence post. I was ready to g and find something to soak up the oil and clean the fence but I received a call from the contractor's office asking how everything went - I mentioned the mess with the oil and fence and was told that the owner must not have seen that and that the crew would be by at the end of the day to clean everything up. They came back and not only cleaned up but they also put down new soil and peat moss and new grass seed. A fantastic job - after I pointed out the problems - as a home owner do not be afraid to stay on top of the situation and express any problems you have with this company - they will respond to you.

We have been doing business with Flavio La Rocca & Sons for the past 15 years. Mr. La Rocca has done the following work on our house: Repaved our driveway, put in new slate on our front porch, repaired our front steps and walkway, put in a new sidewalk, put in new Belgian block curbs and most recently put in a new side patio and walkway.

In estimating the scope of work to be done on the above listed jobs, Mr. La Rocca's expertise and professionalism was always evident. Whenever we had to speak with Mr. La Rocca or his staff about the projects, the communication was always courteous, friendly and efficient.

The quality of the work done was excellent and the workers assigned were very pleasant to deal with. All the projects were done in an efficient and timely manner and the prices charged were fair.

We recommended Mr. La Rocca to our neighbors for work on their houses. Several of them hired Mr.La Rocca as a result of our recommendation and after viewing the quality of his work on our house.

Do not trust this contractor!

I hired La Rocca at the beginning of June to redo my driveway and explained all the details and that I wanted it done by the end of the summer. We signed a contract and he took an initial deposit (for 1/3 of the job) and then asked for additional money for permits which I paid immediately. And then NOTHING HAPPENED.

After 3 months of no work on my driveway the summer ended and I asked for my money back. He refused and told me I'd have to pay a ton of extra costs. I ended up working with the town to get the permit done (he was supposed to handle this) and then asked him to start work. Again, NOTHING HAPPENED.

Finally, after repeated requests to return my money and almost 5 months after I first contracted with him, the temperature dropped from 70 degrees to 45 degrees. That's bad for driveways - warm weather is much better if you want to do a good job. But that's when he wanted to do the job - immediately before it got even colder.

I had three problems - first that I had tried to get him to do the job for 4.5 months already and he hadn't done a thing - could I trust him do actually do a good job now? Second that the weather seemed too cold (he then responded that he did jobs up until Christmas no problem - notice the contradiction) - again, could I trust him? Third that he had taken money I had paid him and used it to pay deposits - in HIS name. The village told me that this was very bad practice. Deposits are supposed to be paid by the contractor as this protects the village against bad work. La Rocca used my money and put it in his name - and he would get it back at the end of the job. Would you trust this guy to rip up your driveway halfway into winter?

After he sent me an insulting and threatening email to my polite questioning I'd had enough. This time when I asked for my money back he told me I'd hear from his lawyer. Then his lawyer tries to low ball me by offering to pay around a quarter of what I'd paid La Rocca and claiming La Rocca was "just a guy trying to run a business". Amazing!

So that's where things stand. I am in the process of suing him after he took my money, lied to me repeatedly and did ABSOLUTELY NO WORK for 5 months.

So if that's the guy you want to work with, then I strongly recommend - do not pay him a cent until he actually does work.
